Purpose of an Annuity
An annuity provides income for a specific number of years or for life. An annuity protects a person against outliving their money. Annuities are not life insurance, but a way of accumulating money and liquidating an estate.

Annuity Owner
Annuity owner is the purchaser of the annuity.

Annuitant
Annuitant is the person who receives the payments from the annuity.

Accumulation Period
Accumulation Period, also known as the pay-in period, is the period of time over which the annuitant makes premium payments into the annuity. It is also the time that the premium payments earn interest on a tax deferred basis. Annuity Period, also known as the annuitization period or liquidation period, is the time during which the money that has accumulated during the accumulation period is converted into income payments to the annuitant.
Note: If an annuitant dies during the accumulation period, the beneficiary will receive the cash value or total premiums paid whichever is greater.

Annuity Funding
There are twoways to fund an annuity:
A single payment (lump sum) Periodic payments, in which premiums are paid in installments over a period of time.
Annuities can also be classified according to when income payments from the annuity begin.

Immediate Annuity
An immediate annuity is one that is purchased with a single lump sum payment and provides income payments that start within one year from the date of purchase.

Deferred Annuity
A deferred annuity is an annuity in which the income payments begin sometime after the first year. Deferred annuities can be funded either with a single lump sum or through periodic payments.

Annuity Payout Options
Annuity payout options specify how annuity funds are to be paid out. They are very similar to the structured settlements annuities options used in life insurance and determine how the policy proceeds are distributed to the beneficiaries.

Straight Life Income Option
The Straight Life Payout Option, also known as Pure Life, will pay a specific amount for the remainder of the annuitant's life. This option provides highest monthly benefit for an individual annuity. Although the annuity payments are guaranteed for the lifetime of the annuitant there is no guarantee that all the proceeds will be full fully paid out, because the payments stop after the annuitant's death.

Life With Period Certain
Life with Period Certain is anotherr annuity payout that is contingent on the annuitant dying. Under this option the annuity payments are guaranteed for the entire lifetime of the annuitant and for a specified period of time to the beneficiary.

Fixed Annuities
Fixed Annuities provide a fixed guaranteed payout. Payments that do not vary from one payment to another and guaranteed minimum rate of interest.

Variable Annuities
A variable annuity serves as a hedge against inflation, and is variable because there is not a guarantee of payout. Payments can vary from one payment to another, and there is not a set rate of interest. A variable annuity is considered a security and is regulated by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). An agent selling annuity must also have a securities license in addition to their Life Insurance License.

Accumulation Units

Acquisition Financing
What is Acquisition Financing
Acquisition financing is the capital that is raised in order to buy another business. Acquisition financing enables the user to satisfy their current acquisition aspirations by providing immediate resources that can be applied to the transaction.

BREAKDOWN 'Financing acquisitions'
There are several different options for a company seeking acquisition financing. Alignment of creditors for a traditional loan are the most common options. Favorable rates for acquisition financing can help smaller companies achieve economies of scale and is generally considered an effective method of increasing the size of company operations. These loans are available through traditional banks as well as loan services that specialize in serving this marketing. Private lenders can offer acquisition financing to those who do not meet bank requirements, but they can also make financing available on more expensive terms. For example, A bank might be inclined to approve financing if the business to be acquired has a steady stream of income, substantial and sustained profits, and valuable assets. By comparison, getting bank approval can be problematic when it comes to financing the acquisition of a company that largely has accounts receivable rather than cash flow.

Multiple forms of business acquisition financing
Depending on the size of the companies involved and the nature of the acquisition, there may be financing options through the Small Business Administration. The SBA 7 (a) loan program, for example, can meet these needs for qualified borrowers. The advance can be as low as 10% for acquisitions when using this program. However, the borrower must meet the SBA requirements for business size, which include limits on net worth, average net income, and total loan size. There may also be extensive documentation for the applicant that includes submission of details about accounts receivable, personal and business tax information, and personal and business financial statements.

Other ways to finance an acquisition are debt that is repaid in the form of shares and the interests of the company making the acquisition. This can come into play if the buyer turns to close partners, such as friends and family, to provide financing to secure the acquisition. Seller financing is another way to finance the deal. This typically involves the buyer making a down payment and the seller financing the remainder of the transaction. The buyer may then make installment payments to the seller over an agreed period.

5 Mysterious People Who Have Finally Been Identified

1. David Lytton
On December 11, 2015, this unidentified man was filmed by CCTV leaving the Manchester Piccadilly railway station in England. A day later, his body was discovered near the "Indian's Head" rock feature overlooking a remote reservoir in Saddleworth Moor. The man had no identification, and other than his train tickets, he was carrying nothing besides an empty vial of Strychnine.

It was believed that he swallowed the poison to commit suicide and likely had some tie to the location where he was found. When reports of the mysterious man's death were made public, many speculated that he was involved in a 1949 plane crash......in which a British European Airways Douglas DC-3 impacted Indian's Head in a fog, killing 24 and leaving 8 survivors. That potential lead, however, turned up no clues, and other attempts to link him to missing persons and suspected spies failed.
The case went cold for a year until police focused on Urdu writing found on the vial and a metal plate in the man's leg. Both items likely came from Pakistan, and the investigation turned to combing through flights that had arrived from the country. By comparing passport photos to the deceased man, police were finally able to identify him as David Lytton in early 2017.

Lytton, formerly known as David Lautenberg, was a 67-year-old man from London who had been retired in Pakistan for 10 years. Despite his identification, the reasons for which Lytton traveled to Saddleworth Moor to end his life remain a mystery.

2. Benjaman Kyle
Early on August 31, 2004, employees at a Richmond Hill, Georgia, Burger King found an unconscious man behind the dumpster. He was naked and sunburned and depressions in his skull appeared to indicate that he had suffered severe blunt force trauma. The man possessed no photo identity documents, and police recorded his name at the hospital as "Burger King Doe."

When he finally woke up two weeks later, he had no memory of his past, other than that he believed his first name was "Benjaman." Further adding to the mystery, the man had been suffering from advanced cataracts that rendered him partially blind......and following surgery to restore his eyesight, he realized that he was nearly 20 years older than he previously thought. Listed as the only missing person the FBI knew where to find, Benjaman took the surname Kyle and referred to himself as BK.

Despite appearing on TV, featuring in a documentary, and taking part in a Reddit AMA, he remained unidentified for a decade. It wouldn't be until 2015 that a genetic detective would discover that BK's real name was William Burgess Powell......a man born in Indiana who disappeared from his family in 1976 after abandoning his car and leaving all of his belongings behind. A paper-trail of odd jobs traced Powell to Boulder and Denver, Colorado, but records of his existence dry up after 1983. It is still not known what Powell was doing in the years before he was found or how he later ended up behind the Burger King...

3. Lori Ruff
On December 24, 2010, the body of Lori Erica Ruff was found in her car parked in the driveway of the Ruff family's Texas home. She had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound and left behind a note for her husband and a sealed letter for her daughter. The Ruff family had always had reservations about Lori, who behaved erratically and refused to speak about her history. That her suicide note contained only "ramblings from a clearly disturbed person" did little to assuage their doubts.

After her funeral, the Ruffs found a box hidden in her closet that suggested "Lori" had been living under a stolen identity......basing her life on the birth certificate of a 2-year-old girl killed in a Washington state house fire in 1988. It is believed that Lori moved to Idaho and used the document to legally change her name and start her mysterious new life.

Scribblings in the box included "North Hollywood police", "402 months", and "Ben Perkins," but offered no clue to her past. Lori's story generated intense public speculation that she was running away from a crime or had escaped a religious cult. Her true origins remained a mystery until 2016, when she was identified using forensic DNA genealogy as Kimberly McLean. McLean ran away from home in 1986 when she was 18 to escape a turbulent family, but it is unclear why she needed a new identity. Where she was and what she was doing between her disappearance and arrival in Texas in 1988 remain almost entirely unknown...

4. Pual Fronczak
On April 27, 1964, one-day-old Paul Fronczak was stolen from his parents and snuck out of a Chicago hospital by an unknown woman. His whereabouts were a mystery until the shock discovery of a toddler of a similar appearance a year later in New Jersey. Although the identity of the abandoned child could not be established scientifically, the Fronczaks were convinced he was Paul.
The FBI returned the child to the family, and he was raised as their own until he failed to resemble the Fronczaks as he grew. It eventually became apparent to the Fronczaks that "Paul" was an entirely different and unidentified child......a suspicion that was eventually confirmed by DNA testing in 2012, opening a second and entirely new mystery.

It took several years for Paul to finally be identified as Jack, a child who had vanished along with his twin sister Jill. Jack's biological parents had since died, leaving them unable to shed any light on his early history or why he was abandoned. Even stranger, it is still not known why Jack was left alone in his stroller while no trace of Jill was ever found. As for the real Paul Fronczak, his FBI case has since been reopened and he is once again a missing person...

5. Bella
On April 18, 1943, four local boys in Hagley Wood, England discovered an unusual wych elm tree with a hollow trunk......and after climbing the tree to peer down into the void, they spotted what appeared to be a human skull with hair. The boys reported the gruesome find to police, who uncovered a complete skeleton stuffed inside of the tree. It was determined that the victim was female, and not far away were also the remains of a hand and a gold wedding ring.

Investigators believed she died from suffocation and had been dead for at least 18 months, but were unable to identify her. With WWII raging, the number of missing people reported to police was overwhelming, and no one came the claim the body. A year later, this unsettling graffiti appeared on the Hagley Obelisk near to the tree where the woman was discovered......asking the eerie question, "Who put Bella in the Witch Elm?" despite the victim never being publicly called that name.

The location of her body is presently unknown and the autopsy from the investigation has long since vanished......making the identity of the mysterious woman a subject of intense intrigue amid rumor of witchcraft and ritual sacrifice. The real story of her death, however, may be even more fascinating and tied to a secret Nazi spy mission during WWII......after declassified British intelligence linked a German singer and movie actress, Clara Bauerle, to a captured Nazi agent. The agent's file contained a photo of Beurle, who allegedly parachuted into England under the codename Clarabella. It is now thought that she may have been captured, killed, and hidden in a cover-up to prevent a local wartime panic...

China threatens to kill the golden goose

A last-minute intervention by Beijing made the battle over the future of TikTok's social network even more complicated, said Zheping Huang and Colum Murphy in Bloomberg.com. Last month, Trump threatened to ban the Chinese-owned network, immensely popular with youth around the world, over concerns it could share data with China's government. Software giants Microsoft—allied with Walmart—and Oracle issued competing bids for Tik-Tok's U.S. operations. But China "threw a wrench" into the plans this week. Much as the U.S. has used export rules to limit how U.S. companies work with China, China has put the "personalized recommendation" algorithms that TikTok is built on in a list of 23 products now requiring approval before being sold overseas. China is trying to "prevent what state-run media called the 'theft' of technology." Zhang Yiming, founder of TikTok parent ByteDance, may still pursue a deal, but China's regulators could also hold up an agreement until after the U.S. elections in November.

Walmart's entry into the TikTok sweepstakes last week highlighted the app's wide- ranging appeal, said Raymond Zhong in The New York Times. The huge retailer's team-up with Microsoft raised some eyebrows. But you can look to China to see why this makes sense. "Chinese e-commerce platforms have been adding livestreaming to their apps for years, and video apps have been adding shopping functions." That could be a model for Walmart. Merchandise sold via livestreaming in China is expected to reach $140 billion this year.

To make that work, though, any U.S. buyer would need TikTok's secret sauce, said Tim Culpan in Bloomberg.com, and it's not clear China will ever let that happen. "Imagine a bidder for KFC being told the deal might not include the Colonel's 11 secret herbs and spices." That's effectively what China just told TikTok's pursuers. While data is what put TikTok in this mess, "it's really the algorithms that matter most to the company" and keep users glued to their phones. Beijing is "threatening to kill TikTok to save it," said Pete Sweeney in BreakingViews .com. Trump's strong-arming has understandably "played poorly in the People's Republic." Americans would react the same way if China's president demanded that "Apple sell its Chinese unit—and its source code—to a Chinese buyer or be kicked out of the country." Rather than allow Washington to set that kind of precedent, China may put TikTok out of its misery.

TikTok is already declining in value, said Dan Gallagher in The Wall Street Journal. In May, it hired Kevin Mayer, once considered the heir apparent to Bob Iger at Disney, as its new CEO. But all the turmoil and the prospect of a sale led Mayer to quit last week rather than "become middle management" again at another tech giant. There's another reason I'm not confident TikTok will survive this turmoil, said Casey Newton in TheVerge .com. It "was able to fend off fierce competition from Facebook and Snapchat" thanks to a "remarkably adept and focused ByteDance team" in a hypercompetitive environment. Microsoft, Walmart, and Oracle can't replicate that culture.

Credit card perks disappear
Credit card account holders are accustomed to being showered with "an ever-expanding menu of perks," said Herb Weisbaum in NBCNews .com. But card companies have begun reeling back "the buffet of free benefits," owing to what they describe as the "low usage" of the perks. Discover, for example, began trimming its perks in February, getting rid of return guarantees, purchase protections, extended warranty protection, auto rental insurance, and flight accident insurance. This month, Chase will also remove price and return protection from its cards, along with a handful of travelrelated perks on selected cards. Citi is also pruning its travel-related perks on some cards as well as its return-protection scheme. Visit your card company's website to check whether your individual card is affected.

Employers help with money problems
"Money stress can be as bad for workplace productivity as back pain," said Beth Pinkser in Reuters.com. It's for this reason that many companies have begun defining financial health as "the next frontier in workplace wellness." In a recent survey by PwC, a quarter of U.S. workers said financial anxiety has led to personal health issues, 40 percent claimed finances have "distracted them" at work, and 15 percent cited money worries as a cause for work absences. In response, some organizations are providing a "robust menu of voluntary financial wellness benefits," including debt management and budgeting as well as stressmanagement training. Others are offering cash relief of around $100 per month on student loan debts, and "discounted services for everything from car buying to pet insurance."

How to get affordable legal help
"Sometimes it takes a lawyer," said Anna Bahney in CNN.com. Financing a car purchase, signing your first apartment lease, reviewing an employment contract, or navigating the aftermath of an auto accident—these are moments when engaging a lawyer could be very helpful. For those intimidated by the potential cost of legal assistance, the website Avvo Advisor offers a 15-minute phone-call service that connects you to a lawyer to answer any of your legal queries for $39. The site Legal Zoom is another option, acting as a broker to provide you with a range of legal services for a flat fee. And at the website UpCounsel, visitors write a description of the legal help they need, and lawyers can then respond with their credentials and an estimated fee.

WHY MILLENNIALS CHOOSE TO BUY HOME

According to NerdWallet's Millennials & Homebuying Study, the top 5 reasons young renters choose to own are:

1. To Have Control over Their Living Space - 93%
Many Millennials who rent a home or apartment prior to buying their own homes, dream of the day that they will be able to paint the walls whatever color they'd like, or renovate an outdated part of their living space. Many others who have waited to add a pet to their families daydream about the day that they'll be able to go pick out their 'furever'friend. Owning your own home gives you the freedom to make those choices.

2. To Have a sense of Privacy & Security - 90%
It is no surprise that having a place to call home, with all that means, in comfort and security, is the #2 reason. As a homeowner, you have control over who has access to your home, and you are able to secure it how you see fit.

3. To Live in a Nicer Home - 81%
Similar to the #1 reason, when you purchase a home, you can choose to live in a nicer home or choose to renovate a home & restore its glory. Owning also allows you to accommodate your growing family or a family member who may need to move in.

4. To Feel Engaged in Their Community - 75%
Owning a home in a community is one of the major reasons why residents become more civically involved. The stakes are raised once your home value is directly tied to the neighborhood and community in which you live.

5. To Have Flexibility in Future Decisions - 53%
Owning a home allows you to use your monthly housing cost as a savings account that can be borrowed against in the future. Having this option available during uncertain times is just one of many reasons why homeowners feel more secure in their homes.

"The majority of millennials said they consider owning a home more sensible than renting for both financial and lifestyle reasons - including control of living space, flexibility in future decisions, privacy and security, and living in a nice home."

Rules for emergency funds
Start building up your emergency fund, said Christine DiGangi in Credit.com. "It may not be the most fun budget category," but emergency funds are an essential part of personal finance. First off, define "emergency." The answer "may not be the same for everyone," but one rule of thumb is to maintain separate accounts for "income emergencies," such as job loss, and "expense emergencies," like paying for unexpected repairs. Financial planners suggest stashing the cash in a dedicated savings account to avoid the temptation of simply writing a check, but "if you don't like the idea of letting money sit in a savings account," you might consider a CD or a Roth IRA. Be wary of early withdrawal fees, but the higher yields will be a nice bonus if you don't have an emergency after all.

Negotiating a debt settlement
Sort out your debts like a pro, said AJ Smith in Credit.com. While "there are countless services out there" for settling debts, "it is possible to resolve this on your own." Begin by making a list of your creditors, and then prioritize the bills with the highest interest or smallest balances. Collectors typically won't settle unless the account is delinquent, but "there is no guarantee they will accept a settlement even if you stop paying." Being up front about your inability to pay may encourage them to negotiate. Calculate the "percentage of the debts you are able to pay and the maximum you can afford," factor in other expenses, and start negotiating with a lowball offer: 25 or 30 percent of the balance. This "sets the tone" and will help you score a more realistic settlement, ideally between 40 and 60 percent of the original debt.

Countering cash buyers
Don't get beat by all-cash bidders, said Daniel J. Goldstein in MarketWatch.com. These days, all-cash deals are making the high-end housing market more competitive than ever. But for buyers who want to finance, there's still hope. For example, some borrowers might combine "second mortgages home-equity lines of credit, and quick closings" to get a leg up. And since many all-cash bids come from overseas, the offers "can appear and disappear." With a big down payment and some patience, "your financing-contingent offer still might have a shot." And recruiting an expert—such as a real estate agent or a loan officer—can help you find sellers who are more "open to accepting bids with financing."

The end of free checking
The age of free checking is fading, said Chris Morran in Consumerist.com. While U.S. consumers and businesses have $1.4 trillion stashed away—more than ever—in checking accounts, banks are limiting "the availability of unconditional free checking" and tightening their requirements, making it harder for many customers to avoid fees. Luckily, "there are still plenty of free checking accounts out there, but many of them are through smaller regional banks and credit unions." Those institutions should be rewarded for continuing to offer a service that used to be—and still ought to be—a given. Consumers can do that "by moving their money, or putting it into interest-earning accounts so that they at least get something in return for allowing the bank to use their deposits."

Curb your shopping enthusiasm
Stop overspending, said Donna Fuscaldo in FoxBusiness.com. If you're hemorrhaging cash, one way to stanch the flow is to learn to keep your spending "triggers" in check. These days, "it's easier than ever to hop online when we're bored." For compulsive shoppers, that can be dangerous, since "boredom or feeling stagnant is a common trigger." Anxiety can also cause people to stress-shop, so "try other activities like taking a walk, chatting with a friend, or organizing a closet to regain some control." And while "the idea of having to 'keep up with the Joneses' resonates" with many people, such insecurity can "drain our budgets." One way to "prevent that trigger from turning into a bingeshopping spree is to set spending limits." Try carrying only cash so you can better "fight the urge to use" your credit cards.

Retiring when self-employed
Can self-employed workers ever really retire? asked Michele Lerner in DailyFinance .com. Irregular income can make it difficult for self-employed people to save, but experts recommend they open a retirement account anyway. "You don't have to fund it right away, but having it open will make it easier to contribute money when you do come into a windfall," said Lule Demmissie of TD Ameritrade. Self-employed people also have a few special retirement options available to them, including SEP-IRAs, which have higher contribution limits than traditional and Roth IRAs, and Solo 401(k)s, which are ideal for self-employed workers with no additional employees.

How to switch bank accounts
Moving your money to a different bank "can be a huge hassle," said Kristin Wong in Lifehacker .com. To make the process "as painless as possible," start by finding the right bank, weighing your priorities and habits against balance requirements, fees, interest rates, and proximity to ATMs and branches. Before you close your old account, check for any unposted checks or scheduled payments to avoid incurring an overdraft fee. And don't empty it right away. "Keep a small cushion in your old account until the transition is complete," just in case. If you have set up automatic payments, remember to reroute them to your new account and "contact your employer and update your direct deposit info." Once you think you've finished with your old bank, beware of "zombie accounts": Some banks reopen recently closed accounts if a deposit is made, which can restart maintenance and minimum balance fees.

Index vs. actively managed funds
Torn between actively managed and index funds? asked Michael A. Pollock in The Wall Street Journal. The good news is you don't have to choose. While "some investors swear" by one or the other, you can "  combine the two types of funds to achieve specific purposes." Index funds are great for broad markets over long periods, but a skilled fund manager may be better for "less efficient market areas that don't trade as actively and are slower to react to new information." Indexes help you cash in on market rallies, while adding "a defensively minded active fund to your index holdings" can help "dial back overall volatility." Some of both may be best.

Nailing your performance review
Don't let your annual performance review "get you down," said Daniel Bortz in CNN .com. These meetings offer "one of the few times of the year you get to chat with your boss about your career," and you can use them to "set the stage for a big raise or promotion." Submit a one-page self-evaluation before the review to set a baseline, summing up a handful of your contributions. Then "request a real critique" to get some useful feedback. Unfortunately, "budgets are typically set by the time of the review," so don't count on a raise. But ask for "details on the salary review process to help you prep for next year." By finding out "how and when your raise was decided and who was consulted," you'll have a head start for the next review.

A very early 529 gift
Why wait until a child is born to start a 529 college savings plan? asked Peter S. Green in The Wall Street Journal. Anyone hoping to become a grandparent one day can open a 529 to "get the savings ball rolling early." A future grandparent who designates the beneficiary as the future parent can contribute as much as $70,000 in a single year tax free (equal to five years' worth of contributions at $14,000). When the infant arrives, the account can be transferred into his or her name. Starting early has major benefits: A 529 plan opened with an initial gift of $14,000, five years before a child is born, funded with $500 every month, and earning interest at 3 percent compounded monthly, would yield $226,784 by the child's 18th birthday. The same plan started at birth would yield $167,336.

IRA and 401(k) changes in 2015
Some taxpayers will be able to save more in their retirement accounts next year, said Emily Brandon in USNews.com. The annual limit for 401(k)s and 403(b)s has been raised by $500, to $18,000. The IRA contribution limit has been left unchanged at $5,500, or $6,500 if you are 50 or older. Savers will also soon have a new account option: the myRA, the no-fee Roth IRA accounts offered by the Treasury Department and available later this year. The accounts are open to individuals who make less than $129,000 a year ($191,000 for couples) and are guaranteed to never lose value. And for those savers with several IRA accounts, a new rule takes effect Jan. 1 prohibiting more than one rollover from one IRA to another in any 12-month period.

Beware of power-sucking appliances
Don't let "vampire appliances" bleed your bank account dry, said Catey Hill in MarketWatch.com. "Even when you're not using electronics and appliances, they may still be sucking up energy" and costing you hundreds of dollars a year. Utility experts estimate that roughly 10 percent of the average household's energy bill is thanks to power-sucking appliances. Flat-screen TVs are often the priciest power drain, and though it's impractical to unplug your TV each day, one option is to buy an advanced power strip, which prevents electronics from using power when they're not in use. At a cost of $15 to $30, the strips will "save you money in the long run." Experts also recommend using the power strips to plug in video game consoles, cable boxes, laser printers, and small kitchen appliances.

The right way to rent textbooks
If the high cost of textbooks has you in a panic, consider renting, said Ann Carrns in The New York Times. The average cost of college textbooks and supplies is about $1,200 per year, but more-affordable alternatives are becoming more popular. Last semester, more than a third of students rented at least one textbook, up from a quarter a year earlier. When deciding whether to rent or buy, start by comparing prices, both at your campus bookstore and online booksellers like Chegg.com and Amazon. If you rent and are worried about late fees, text and email reminders can help you stay in the clear. And don't forget that there are a few downsides to renting, including fees for any damage and the fact that you won't "recoup any of your money by reselling the volume."

Consolidating IRAs with a spouse
If you and your spouse are trying to merge a retirement account, forget it, said Liz Weston in Bankrate.com. Though spouses can inherit retirement accounts after a partner's death, retirement accounts are ultimately "like credit scores. Each person has his or her own, and they can't be merged after marriage." But if you're trying to make managing your retirement funds more, well, manageable, consider consolidating your family's accounts to a single investment firm. "Not only will it be easier to manage and coordinate your investments, but some firms lower or waive fees based on how much a household has invested with them." Vanguard, for example, waives one of its annual fees when a household has combined assets of $50,000 or more.

The cost of retail-branded cards
Stay away from store credit cards, said Mitch Lipka in DailyFinance.com. Though big signup discounts can make store-branded credit cards a tempting offer, a new survey released last week shows those initial savings will cost you—big time. The CreditCards.com survey found that the average retail card's annual percentage rate was 23.2 percent—more than eight points above the average credit card's interest rate, "and more than double what consumers with good credit can get." That means that a cardholder with a $1,000 balance on a typical store-branded card who makes minimum monthly payments would spend more than six years paying off the debt, including $840 in interest. That's a year longer—and more than twice as much in interest—than the same balance on the typical nonstore card.

The benefits of aging
There are more perks to turning 50 than just cheap movie tickets, said Lindsay Gellman in The Wall Street Journal, but surveys indicate that fewer than half of eligible seniors are taking advantage of them. Unlike their youthful counterparts, investors who have hit the half-century mark can bolster their retirement savings by making pretax "catch-up  contributions" of up to $23,000 annually to their 401(k) accounts, $5,500 more than investors under 50 are allowed. Seniors can also put up to $6,500 toward an IRA, $1,000 more per year than permitted for younger investors. And while 59 ½ is typically the age at which retirement distributions can be taken without incurring a 10 percent early withdrawal penalty, workers who retire, quit, or are laid off can tap an employer-based savings plan penalty-free beginning the year they turn 55.

Keeping wealth in the family
While you can't take it with you, the wealth you leave behind may not last as long as you'd like, said Beth Pinsker in Reuters.com. Studies have shown that roughly 90 percent of families with at least $5 million in investable assets exhaust their estates within three generations. The main reason, according to new research from Merrill Lynch, is that many rich families have an "unreasonable expectation of how much they can withdraw and still have the money last." It's partly a math problem, as estate planners often don't account for just how big families can get by the third or fourth generation, and thus fail to adjust distributions or lower expectations. Another major problem: Later generations rest on their laurels. "To make wealth last forever," said study co-author Michael Liersch, "you're probably going to need future generations to replenish that wealth."

Cash floods the housing market
When it comes to home buying, cash is still king, said Doug Carroll in USA Today. Allcash home purchases accounted for one third of total sales in the first quarter this year, up from 29 percent in 2012. While speculators have been paying cash to snap up homes to rent or flip in recent years, the current trend is being driven by retirees and Baby Boomers who have been put off by the challenges of today's mortgage market. Thanks to "decades of accumulated equity," older Americans have the funds to buy a home outright or to buy rental property as an additional income stream during retirement.

Top 10 Ways to Make Money Online
Are you tired of the 9-to-5 routine? Did our Worst Jobs video do nothing to make you feel better about your current employment? We may be able to help you, as always, with another great installment! This time, we're tackling the top ten real ways you can make money online! These may not replace your full-time job immediately, but with a little time, patience and imagination, you could go create a career out of the comfort of your own home!

10. Online Psychic and Tarot Readings
Regardless of what you believe, there are those out there that swear by astrological readings, tarot cards, and psychics. That also means there are people out there that would pay others to provide said services, turning what some would consider ludicrous into a viable business. Via websites like Kasamba.com, alleged psychics can sign themselves up for paid live chat sessions and charge a specific amount per minute. Tarot readings are a bit more complicated to get started in, mostly because there are so many free services offered, but Craigslist has proved a viable starting point before moving onto your own online tarot reading service.

9. Online Surveys
Ever wonder how some companies make the decisions they do? Sometimes it's an internal decision based off of figures and estimations, but consumer opinion can be a big part of change; but where would those opinions come from and how do  hey coax people to take the time to do a survey? Well, with online surveys and cash money, of course! There are plenty of websites that offer compensation for surveys, so much that the market is getting pretty saturated, but some sites are a bit more generous than others. If you aim to make some extra cash through online surveys, recommended sites include SwagBucks.com, OpinionOutpost.com, and Toluna.com, or for Android users, the app Google Opinion Rewards is a great way to earn a few bucks towards your Google Credit account.

8. Online Focus Groups
Like online surveys, online focus groups allow for convenient consumer and political research, but they require a bit more from the participants than clicking a few radio buttons. Rather than gathering a group of people in one location, though, everything is done in an online forum. As there isn't much of an inconvenience to participants, not every online focus group pays, but if you're looking for a quick buck, FocusGroup.com is a valuable resource. A moderator will steer the discussion, which is held over a web-based technology like WebEx and GoToMeeting, and you won't have to deal with the awkwardness of face-to-face  iscussion.

7. Etsy
Feeling crafty and don't know what to do with those 25 scarves you crocheted? You can try your luck at an arts and crafts show, spend the money to secure a table, and enjoy the blistering heat, or you can simply open an Etsy shop and sell your handmade product from the comfort of your own home. Members of the eCommerce site specialize in handcrafting unique items, leading to a community of over 1.6 million sellers and $2.39 billion in annual sales in 2015 alone. Additional to arts and crafts, Etsy also allows shops to carry vintage and antique items that are at least 20 years old.

6. eBay
Have a lot of junk that you think may be worth something? Since 1995, the online auction house has proved to be a fine means of unloading your unwanted stuff. While you're free to sell just about anything you can find, those that have the potential to make the most money tend to either focus on limited collectibles, antiques or open their own eBay Store and specialize in stocking and selling anything from clothing to electronics to niche items like, uh, erotic postcards. One of the best ways to find stuff to sell on eBay is by visiting local thrift stores, garage sales and estate sales. Be sure to bring a device with an internet connection so you can price-check your lucky finds before you buy them!

5. Owning or Building a Website
Have a service you think you can offer? Is your mind filled with things that you'd love to throw out for the world to read? Think you have the know-how to turn an online space into an advertising mecca? You may want to shell out the minimal start-up cash to build yourself a website. Making money from a website is a long-term endeavor that takes a lot of patience and time, but if the formula can be perfected, your bank account can grow from ad revenue. If you are the creative type and know your way around Wordpress, or even better, can code, there are plenty of small brick-and-mortar and service companies looking to have a website built, and will often pay in the $1,000's.

4. Virtual Assistant
Thanks to the wonders of the internet, some jobs are able to leave the office setting and be done from the convenience of your home. One position, which offers the perks of a home setting and independence, is a virtual assistant. Much like an in-office assistant, virtual assistants act as a sort of liaison for a higher-up employee, scheduling meetings, fielding phone calls, performing research and record keeping, and partaking in conference calls and online meetings. Via e-mail, telephone calls, and online meeting software, virtual assistants communicate with fellow employees and not once do they need to slip into high heels or throw on a tie to get the job done.

3. Online Tutoring
Maybe you've pursued a career in teaching but find that it's not at all what "younger you" thought it was cracked up to be. Maybe you're in between teaching jobs or are just waiting for summer break to end. Whether the situation, your schooling doesn't have to go to waste, especially not with online tutoring as a feasible alternative. Cutting out the need to deal with children in a face-to-face setting, online tutoring allows you to use your educational background to help people of all ages with homework, basic and advanced test prep, and general coursework. Even if you're still pursuing a degree, so long as you're a Sophomore in a 4-year degree program, sites like Tutor.com will consider you for an online tutor position.

2. Freelancing
If you have an ability to create something others may struggle with, such as an informative piece of writing, beautiful graphic logo, or piece of music, you could have a future as an online freelancer. Typically, freelancers are responsible solely for content, whether it be a company logo, website design or podcast theme song. Just knowing how to create something is one part of the battle as marketing yourself and finding clients can be far more frustrating and time-consuming. Websites like PeoplePerHour, Upwork.com, Fiverr.com and FlexJobs.com are vital resources for starting freelancers looking to remain and succeed in an online setting.

1. Own a YouTube Channel
It's true, you can make quite a bit of money by owning and operating your own YouTube channel. What isn't true is any inkling you may have that it's easy to do. Many different factors go into what makes a YouTube channel successful, first and foremost being whether or not the idea is original and appealing. Though that doesn't mean you need any talent or expensive equipment, there are plenty of channels that have started or continue to use sub-par equipment, yet have a huge following. YouTube GradeAUnderA is a prime example - a channel that went from 50,000 to 2.8 million subscribers in just one year, utilizing only Microsoft Paint and Movie Maker to make his videos. YouTube is all about creativity and finding an audience that enjoys your content. Chances are if you find something funny, entertaining or educational, then someone else will too - so don't be afraid to start creating content and starting your career path on YouTube!
