8 Habits of Wealthy and Successful People

1) Wake Up Early
The Rock is famous for waking up around 5 am to get two workout before 8 am and then go on with the rest of his day, but CEOs and successful entrepreneurs do this too, take a look at Richard Branson...!

2) Read More
Successful entrepreneurs need to know about a lot of topics they probably didn't learn at school, but regardless of your profession or what exactly you're trying to accomplish books are a great way to learn about topics you don't know about.

3) Invest in Yourself Successful entrepreneurs spend all their day working on their business but most them also spend a lot of time working of themselves be it reading, taking classes, seeking mentors, meditating or anything that can help them achieve their goals.

4) Meditate
Meditation has become really popular among CEOs and Managers. This is no surprise for anyone who has followed a consistent meditation practice, after all, you can start seeing benefits like reduced stress and anxiety, better sleep among many others with only 10 minutes of meditation per day.

5) Start Investing
According to The Millionaire Next Door the average millionaire in the United States directs 20% of his income towards investments, you don't need to invest 20% of your salary but the sooner you starts the more money you'll have in a couple of years.

6) Workout
ilf you want to have mental clarity and energy throughout the day you need to be exercising, you don't need to go overboard with it, just jog 30 minutes a day or jump some rope or basically any activity that elevates your heart rate will get the job done.

7) Start Keeping Track
Peter Drucker, author of The Effective Executive that says "what gets measured gets managed" and what he means by this, is that if you're not tracking your progress you're not going improve.

8) Engage in Deep Work
In modern times we have a lot of progress on technology, business medicine and everywhere else but we have lost a very valuable skill that our ancestors did have. And that is the ability to concentrate for long periods of time.

10 QUESTION YOU SHOULD ASK MORTGAGE LENDERS
What's the interest rate?
Right off the bat, you should ask your lender for a direct interest rate quote as well as the corresponding annual percentage rate (APR) for the loan. Since the APR accounts for fees and other loan-related charges, it gives you an apples-to-apples comparison among lenders. Don't be afraid to shop around until you find one you're comfortable with.

How many points does that include?
A point is a fee paid to the lender at closing in exchange for a reduced interest rate. (1 point = 1% of your total mortgage amount.) Be sure to ask your lender how many points are included in the quoted interest rate and what the benefits might be to buying more or fewer points.

How much money do I need to put down?
To get the best rate and terms for your loan, it's usually best to put down at least 20% if possible, although a lower down payment doesn't necessarily disqualify you. There is a chance that a monthly PMI (private mortgage insurance) payment will be added if your down payment is lower than 20%. Your down payment will affect other variables as well, such as your rate, terms and monthly payments. Ask your lender for more information on the minimum down payment required for your loan, and decide what's right for you.

When can I lock down the interest rate?
Interest rates always fluctuate. Sometimes locking in a low rate can really pay off. Ask your lender when you can lock down a particular rate, and for how long. Keep in mind, lenders will usually offer lower interest rates for shorter-term locks and higher interest rates for longer-term locks.

What are my estimated closing costs?
Remember to factor in the various costs and fees associated with buying a home. Particularly closing costs. Closing costs include loan-origination fees, appraisal fees and attorney fees (if any), to name a few. Ask your lender to estimate what your closing costs might be so you can budget accordingly.

Are there any other costs or fees I should know about?
Be sure to ask your lender for a detailed list of all the costs and fees you might encounter during the homebuying process. The more information you can collect up front, the more prepared you'll be should you run into any unexpected expenses along the way.

What's the difference between a fixed-rate and an adjustable-rate mortgage?
A fixed-rate mortgage keeps the same interest rate for the life of the loan, typically 15- or 30-year terms. This keeps your monthly payment for principal and interest steady and predictable over time. Adjustable-rate mortgages, or ARMs, have interest rates that change based on the market, so your payment will go up and down. Most ARMs are based on a 30-year term and typically start with an initial fixed interest rate for a specific period of time, usually 5.7 or 10 years.

Are there any special requirements I should be aware of?
There are all sorts of qualification guidelines for homebuyers applying for a mortgage. Typical requirements relate to income level compared to debt, employment status and credit history. But, if you're a military veteran or first-time homebuyer, you may also be eligible for special government-sponsored mortgage programs. Talk to your lender to see what you might qualify for.

Can you estimate when the closing will be?
A lot of factors help determine when your exact closing date will be many of which are completely out of your control. Ask your lender for a ballpark estimate of when you might expect to close. That way you'll at least have a rough idea of the timetable you're working with

Is there anything that could cause a delay?
The best way to avoid delays in your closing is to stay in touch with your lender and always provide the most up-to-date and accurate documentation in a timely fashion.

10 WAYS TO DERAIL AN AI PROGRAM
Despite big investments, many organizations get disappointing results from their AI and analytics efforts. What makes programs go off track? Companies set themselves up to fail when:
1. They lack a clear understanding of advanced analytics, staffing up with data scientists, engineers, and other key players without realizing how advanced and traditional analytics differ.
2. They don't assess feasibility, business value, and time horizons, and launch pilots without thinking through how to balance short-term wins in the first year with longer-term payoffs.
3. They have no strategy beyond a few use cases, tackling AI in an ad hoc way without considering the bigpicture opportunities and threats AI presents in their industry.
4. They don't clearly define key roles, because they don't understand the tapestry of skill sets and tasks that a strong AI program requires.
5. They lack "translators," or experts who can bridge the business and analytics realms by identifying high-value use cases, communicating business needs to tech experts, and  generating buy-in with business users.
6. They isolate analytics from the business, rigidly centralizing it or locking it in poorly coordinated silos, rather than organizing it in ways that allow analytics and business experts to work closely together.
7. They squander time and money on enterprisewide data cleaning instead of aligning data consolidation and cleanup with their most valuable use cases.
8. They fully build out analytics platforms before identifying business cases, setting up architectures like data lakes without knowing what they'll be needed for and often integrating platforms with legacy systems unnecessarily.
9. They neglect to quantify analytics' bottomline impact, lacking a performance management framework with clear metrics for tracking each initiative.
10. They fail to focus on ethical, social, and regulatory implications, leaving themselves vulnerable to potential missteps when it comes to data acquisition and use, algorithmic bias, and other risks, and exposing themselves to social and legal consequences.

BERKOWITZ, David Richard
New Yorkers are accustomed to reports of violent death in every form, from the mundane to the bizarre. They take it all in stride, accepting civic carnage as a price of living in the largest, richest city in America. But residents were unprepared for the commencement of an allout reign of terror in July 1976. For 13 months, New York would be a city under siege, its female citizens afraid to venture out by night while an apparent homicidal maniac was waiting, seeking prey.

The terror came with darkness on July 29, 1976. Two young women, Donna Lauria and Jody Valenti, had parked their car on Buhre Avenue in Queens, remaining in the vehicle and passing time in conversation. If they saw the solitary male pedestrian at all, they didn't take note of him. In any case, they never saw the pistol that he raised to pump five shots through the windshield. Donna Lauria was killed immediately; her companion survived and got off "easy," with a bullet in one thigh.

The shooting was a tragic incident, but in itself was not unusual for New York City. There was scattered sympathy but no alarm among the residents of New York's urban combat zone . . . until the next attack.

On October 23, Carl Denaro and Rosemary Keenan parked outside a bar in Flushing, Queens. Again, the gunman went unnoticed as he crouched to fire a single bullet through the car's rear window. Wounded, Carl Denaro survived. A .44-caliber bullet was found on the floor of the car, and detectives matched it to slugs from the Lauria murder.

Just over one month later, on November 26, Donna DeMasi and Joanne Lomino were sitting together on the stoop of a house in the Floral Park section of Queens. A man approached them from the sidewalk, asking for directions, but before he could complete the question he had drawn a pistol, blasting at the startled women. Both were wounded, Joanne paralyzed forever
with a bullet in her spine.

Again the slugs were readily identified, and now detectives knew they had a random killer on their hands. The gunman seemed to favor girls with long, dark hair, and there was speculation that the shooting of Denaro in October may have been an "accident." The young man's hair was shoulder length; a gunman closing on him from behind might have mistaken Carl
Denaro for a woman in the darkness.

Christmas season passed without another shooting, but the gunman had not given up his hunt. On January 30, 1977, John Diel and Christine Freund were parked and necking in the Ridgewood section of New York, when bullets hammered out their windshield. Freund was killed on impact, while her date was physically unscathed. Virginia Voskerichian, an Armenian exchange student, was walking toward her home in Forest Hills on March 8, when a man approached and shot her in the
face, killing her instantly. Detectives noted that she had been slain within 300 yards of the January murder scene.

On April 17, Alexander Esau and his date, Valentina Suriani, were parked in the Bronx, a few blocks from the site of the Lauria-Valenti shooting. Caught up in each other, they may not have seen the gunman coming; certainly they had no time to dodge the fusillade of bullets that killed them both immediately, fired from pointblank range.

Detectives found a crudely printed letter in the middle of the street, near Esau's car. Addressed to the captain in charge of New York's hottest manhunt, the note contained a chilling message.

The note described "Sam" as a drunken brute who beat the members of his family and sent his son out hunting "tasty meat," compelling him to kill. There would be other letters from the gunman, some addressed to newsman Jimmy Breslin, hinting at more crimes to come and fueling the hysteria that had already gripped New York. The writer was apparently irrational but no less dangerous for that, and homicide investigators had no clue to his identity.

On June 26, Salvatore Lupo and girlfriend Judy Placido were parked in Bayside, Queens, when four shots pierced the windshield of their car. Both were wounded; both survived. On July 31, Robert Violante and Stacy Moskowitz parked near the Brooklyn shore. The killer found them there and squeezed off four shots at their huddled silhouettes, striking both young people in the head. Stacy died instantly; her date survived, but damage from his wounds left Violante blind for life.

It was the last attack, but homicide detectives didn't know that yet. A woman walking near the final murder scene recalled two traffic officers writing a ticket for a car parked close to a hydrant; moments later, she had seen a man approach the car, climb in, and pull away with squealing tires. A check of parking ticket records traced an old Ford Galaxy belonging to one David
Berkowitz, of Pine Street, Yonkers. Staking out the address, officers discovered that the car was parked outside; a semiautomatic rifle lay in plain view on the seat, together with a note written in the "Son of Sam's" distinctive, awkward style. When Berkowitz emerged from his apartment, he was instantly arrested and confessed his role in New York's reign of terror.

The story told by Berkowitz seemed tailor-made for an INSANITY DEFENSE in court. The "Sam" referred to in his letters was a neighbor, one Sam Carr, whose Labrador retriever was allegedly possessed by ancient demons, beaming out commands for Berkowitz to kill and kill again. On one occasion he had tried to kill the dog, but it was useless; demons spoiled his aim, and when the dog recovered from its wounds, the nightly torment had redoubled in intensity.

A number of psychiatrists described the suspect as a paranoid schizophrenic, suffering from delusions and therefore incompetent to stand trial. The lone exception was Dr. David Abrahamson, who found that Berkowitz was sane and capable of understanding that his actions had been criminal. The court agreed with Abrahamson and ordered Berkowitz to trial. The gunman soon pled guilty and was sentenced to 365 years in prison.

Ironically, Berkowitz seemed grateful to Dr. Abrahamson for his sanity ruling and later agreed to a series of interviews that Abrahamson published in his book Confessions of Son of Sam (1985). The interviews revealed that Berkowitz had tried to kill two women during 1975, attacking them with knives, but he turned squeamish when they screamed and tried to fight him off. ("I didn't want to hurt them," he explained, confused. "I only wanted to kill them.") A virgin at the time of his arrest,
Berkowitz was prone to fabricate elaborate lies about his bedroom prowess, all the while intent upon revenge against the women who habitually rejected him. When not engaged in stalking female victims, Berkowitz reportedly was an accomplished arsonist: a secret journal listed details of 300 fires for which he was allegedly responsible around New York. In his conclusion, Dr. Abrahamson described his subject as a homicidal exhibitionist who meant his crimes to be a public spectacle and harbored
fantasies of "dying for a cause."

There is another side of David Berkowitz, however, and it surfaced shortly after his arrest, with allegations of his membership in a satanic cult. In letters mailed from prison, Berkowitz described participation in a New York cult affiliated with the lethal "Four P Movement," based in California. He revealed persuasive inside knowledge of a California homicide, unsolved
since 1974, and wrote that "There are other Sams out there—God help the world." According to the story told by Berkowitz in prison, two of neighbor Sam Carr's sons were also members of the killer cult that specialized in skinning dogs alive and
gunning victims down on darkened streets. One suspect, John Charles Carr, was said to be the same "John Wheaties" mentioned in a letter penned by Berkowitz, containing other clues that point to cult involvement in the random murders. Calling themselves "The Children," the cultists operated from a base in Untermeyer Park, where mutilated dogs were found from time to time. Cult members represented the "Twenty-Two Disciples of Hell" mentioned in another "Son of Sam" letter.

Suspect John Carr fled New York in February 1979 and "committed suicide" under mysterious circumstances in Minot, North Dakota, two days later. Brother Michael Carr died in a single-car crash in October 1979, and New York authorities reopened the
"Sam" case after his death.

Newsman Maury Terry, after six years on the case, believes there were at least five different gunmen in the "Son of Sam" attacks, including Berkowitz, John Carr, and several suspects—one a woman—who have yet to be indicted. Terry also notes that six of the seven shootings fell in close proximity to recognized occult holidays, the March 8 Voskerichian attack emerging as the sole exception to the pattern. In the journalist's opinion, Berkowitz was chosen as a scapegoat by the other cultists, who then defaced his apartment with weird graffiti, whipping up a bogus "arson ledger"—which includes peculiar, out-of-order entries—to support a plea of innocent by reason of insanity.

Berkowitz himself confirmed the occult connection in conversations with fellow inmates and letters mailed from prison. One such, posted in October 1979, reads: I really don't know how to begin this letter, but at one time I was a member of an occult group. Being sworn to secrecy or face death I cannot reveal the name of the group, nor do I wish to. This group contained a mixture of satanic practices which included the teachings of Aleister Crowley and Eliphaz [sic] Levi. It was (still is) totally blood oriented and I am certain you know just what I mean. The Coven's doctrine are a blend of Druidism, the teachings of the Secret Order of the Golden Dawn, Black Magick and a host of other unlawful and obnoxious practices.

As I said, I have no interest in revealing the Coven, especially because I have almost met sudden death on several occasions (once by half an inch) and several others have already perished under mysterious circumstances. These people will stop at nothing, including murder. They have no fear of man-made laws or the Ten Commandments.

As Maury Terry noted, both the satanic Process Church of Final Judgment and its spin-off successor, the "Four P" cult, were "offshoot, fringe-type" movements spawned by Scientology. Both groups were also linked to the Charles MANSON FAMILY in California—as was convicted killer William Mentzer, named by Berkowitz in prison interviews as the triggerman in the January 1977 shooting of John Diel and Christine Freund. Investigation of the alleged cult continues, supported by testimony from convicted cannibal killer Stanley Dean Baker, but no further indictments have been filed to date.

Top 10 Scary French Urban Legends

Its about time we talked about France! Its a country known for its rich history and culture - but today were not going to be talking about restaurants, museums and buildings - were going to be talk about the dark stories that have haunted the people of France for hundreds - or even thousands of years. Will they end haunting you too? And this is the Top 10 Scary French Urban Legends.

10. THE LOU CARCOLH

This urban legend originates from the Gascony region of France. The Lou Carcolh is said to be a disgusting, grotesque creature that wanders the countryside of southern France. Its described as half snake, half snail. Its massive and long body carried an enormous shell on its back. Its hideous mouth is surrounded by several long, hairy and slime covered tentacles that can extend for not inches or feet - but for miles, yes, miles. They send these tentacles stretching out from the caves they live on. They wait for people to accidentally touch one and then - bang - they grab hold of you and drag you down underground where they swallow you whole with their huge mouth.

9. MEAT PIES

In the 15th century, the story goes that a barber and a cook made a deal in Paris. The barber would slit the throats of his clients who were mainly poor college students. He would then chop up their bodies and send them through a trapdoor to a cook - straight to his kitchen. The cook would then use the human meat for his pies - there were many different flavors and sizes to reflect the diversity of his supply ... business grew for both of them and the bakers became one of the citys most well known Patisseries. Nobody was wise to what was going on - at least no human. One day, a German student called Alaric was visiting the barber. His dog sensed that something wasnt right and began barking at the  neighbors. When people came to investigate - they found the cellar, full of torture tools used to hack apart the corpses. The two men confessed to their heinous crimes and were burnt alive in iron cages.

8. THE PELUDA

This creature has been a feared part of French folklore for generations. Its name means -hairy or shaggy beast- but to be honest - its a whole lot more than that. They are said to have stingers like a porcupine, the head and neck of a snake, tortoise feet and a serpent tail. Their breath withers crops, they can fire their quills like arrows, spit acid out of their tail and if they attack you - youre doomed - they are said to be invulnerable all over their body except for their tail. With their huge size, people say they could create floods simply by stepping on rivers. Some believe that the Peluda was on of the animals that was not saved by Noah and his Ark in the Bible. However, it still survived the Great Flood that came by hiding in a cave. Afterwards, it went on a rampage across the world - killing everything that got to board the ark. Some say it still continues this today, even if theyre only left in France.

7. THE CHATEAU DE TRECESSON

This is a medieval castle in the Brittany region of France. From the outside, its an impressive looking building - attracting tourists from all over - but don't be fooled by its outward charm, the Chateau is famous for its terrifying ghost stories. One night, many years ago, a black coach stopped near the moat and two men got out. They used shovels and picks to dig a deep grave in silence. From the coach they dragged a young woman dressed as a bride - her face as pale as her dress. She doesnt cry or beg for mercy as her executioners lay her in her grave and cover her with dirt. The men then ride off into the darkness. A local man saw the whole thing from the trees and gathered the other villagers to help. They dug her up and tried to save her but by sunrise she had died without saying a word. They never knew who she was or why they killed her - but it wasnt the last time people saw her. In the centuries since then, locals have sworn they still see her ghost floating on the waters of the moat, still in her wedding dress - and still deathly silent.

6. CATACOMBS

This is perhaps one of the most famous french urban legend and creepy parts of Paris. They are a series of tunnels that wind underneath the city. They are said to hold the remains of some six million people there. They were first started in the late 18th century to help deal with the citys overflowing cemeteries. A sign at the entrance reads -Stop! This is the empire of the dead!800 meters of the walkways in lines entirely with bones. Over the years locals have shared stories of dark goings on among the bones - legends of Masonic cults meeting, black masses, Nazi Gatherings, gang fights and serial killers.

5. THE WOODEN LEG

In The Chateau de Combourgis, there is a ghost with a wooden leg. It is said to be the ghost of Comte de Combourg - he was a general who lived there 300 years ago and lost his in battle, having it replaced by a wooden one. In life, his leg was said to send echos around the castle so that everyone knew where he was. After he died though, that never went away. In the years since, many visitors have said theyve heard his leg thumping in the night. Some even say theyve seen it walking up and down the stairs by itself - no body attached to it - accompanied only by a mysterious black cat.

4. A STRANGE CONCERT

On June 2nd 1925, a 24 year old medical student named Jean Romier was studying in a garden in Paris. An elderly man approached him dressed in a strange riding coat. The two men began to talk about classical music and eventually, the  old man invites Jean to come and listen to his concert he was putting on with some friends on Friday. Jean accepted and asked him for his name and address. He said he was Alphonse Berruyer and his address was Rue de Vaugirard, 3rd floor, on the left. Next Friday, Jean arrived at the given address and was welcome in where he met the Alphonses whole family. They were lovely to him but Jean couldn't shake this strange feeling that something wasnt right. Maybe it was the old fashioned apartment with its outdated decor and gas lighting. They musicians sit down and perform some classical music including Mozart. Jean stayed for a few hours after and talked to Alphonses about music. He thanked him and left.

Out in the street, he realised he had left his lighter inside. He went up and rang the bell but there was no answer. He kept trying until a neighbor came out and asked what the problem was. Jean said he is trying to see Alphonse but the neighbour said - I think youre mistaken, Jean has been dead for 20 years and that the apartment has been empty since then. Jean tells him thats impossible, he had just spent a whole night with him and his family. The neighbour started to become suspicious of Jean and accused him of being a thief. The police unlocked the apartment and took Jean inside along with the owner of the place - Alphonses great-great-great Grandson. They walked through the apartment which was now empty, when they got to the back room they found a side table covered in dust. There, sitting on top, was Jeans lighter. Some say Jean experienced a time slip, others refuse to believe this happened at all - either way, theres an official police report out there that contains this story - and many believe its unsolved.

3. THE TUILERIES PHANTOM

This is the story of a man called Jean. He worked as a butcher near the Tuileries palace in Paris during the reign of Catherine de Medicis in the 16th century. She ordered Jean to be killed because he had threatened to reveal many of the royal familys secrets. Just before he was executed, he told his executioner that he would rise from the dead. The executioner left Jeans corpse in the garden. He then went to tell Catherine the deed had been done. When he returned to the garden to dispose of the body, he found Jeans corpse missing. A few days later, the Queens astrologist reported having a vision.

In it, he claimed he saw all the inhabitants of the palace die a terrible death and that Jean would haunt the palace until it was destroyed. Not long after, the executioner was on his way to the palace when he looked behind him - and froze in horror. There stood Jean, drenched - as if he was still alive - covered in blood - thus began the legend of the Red Man. He is said to have haunted the grounds ever since. People believe that comes across Jean - the little red man - means a terrible tragedy will follow shortly.

2. THE DEVILS DOOR OF NOTRE DAME

Notre Dame is a very famous Cathedral in Paris - many visitors notice its elegant side doors with their intricate iron pattern. They were designed by an artist called Biscornet - his talents were known throughout France. The doors were considered a masterpiece - taking months to complete in Biscornets workshop. Parisians were so impressed that some of them began to doubt he did it alone. This was the 1300s - an age of deep superstition in Europe - some people said that Biscornet had sold his soul to the devil in exchange for this masterpiece.

Locals said they had been to his studio during his work hours where they had found him unconscious on the floor next to the finished piece which had been mysteriously completed in record time. When they came to first use the door on the Cathedral, the priests claim that they could only get it to work after sprinkling it with Holy Water. Biscornet died soon after and in the years since, many experts have struggled to explain how he made this with the basic tools of the time. Some also point to his name - Bis means two or twice while cornet means horn - put it together and you have the two horned man.

1. CHATEAU DE BRISSAC

This old French castle in the Loire Valley was first built in the 11th century. Its been almost a thousand years since then and its walls have seen some grizzly deaths and hauntings. Perhaps the most famous is the story of Charlotte. She was the wife of Jacques de Breze, the lord of the castle in the 1400s. One night, he came home after a hunt and had dinner with Charlotte - then, they went to bed in their separate rooms - the marriage was said to be for political reasons, not love. That night, he was woken by his servant who said Charlotte had another man in his room - it was one of his hunter partners.

He flew into a rage, grabbed his sword and attacked both of them - slashing and hacking away. By the time they were dead, their bodies had almost 100 wounds inflicted. Charlotte was actually the half sister of King Louis the 6th. He stripped Jacques of all his titles and took possession of his castle. As for Charlotte, well, people say she never left - her traumatic death made her a ghost, cursed to haunt the castle forever. They say at night on the walls of the castle you can see a female ghost in a green dress with bloody, gaping holes all over her body. She is silent except for when she returns to the room where she was murdered - where deathly moans and cries can be heard until dawn.

Two horror stories and urban legends from Japan

We are still in the month of Halloween, that is why this time we bring you some urban legends from Japan. We invite you to take this terrifying tour of different scenarios in the company of various ghosts and / or spirits, whose origin is loaded with culture and a vast Japanese superstition.

Two horror stories
REVERSE APPLAUSE

A young couple went on a car ride to a spooky place in the middle of the night, however, once they reached their destination they had an argument. The young man decided to leave and left his girlfriend there alone. Soon after, the boyfriend realized that leaving his girlfriend in a haunted place was not the best thing to do, so he returned for her.

Once they met, they reconciled and left together as if nothing had happened.

On the way back, they saw a man on the side of the road who greeted them. However, the man did not greet them with his palm, but with the back of his hand.

Then the bride said:

-How sad, he's alone here at this time of night. Let's take it home.

"No," replied the groom. "People who do such actions in reverse are no longer from this world," he added.

"Wow, that's incredible!" Said the young woman and immediately clapped her hands.

The groom looked down and realized that she was clapping with the back of her hands.

WE ARE FRIENDS, RIGHT?

A group of two men and two women went to a party at the university. The four of them had been friends since high school so they had a lot to talk about. As things got animated they began to discuss the possibility of going out on a little test of bravery.

Finally, one of the men drove and took his companions into a tunnel that was " haunted ." The place where the tunnel was located was old and covered with vines.

They all got out of the car curious and started taking photos as they made their way through the tunnel and then returned to the car. However, even though everyone had returned to the vehicle, the driver would not start the car.

"Why don't you start?" The three asked in unison. "Let's go, let's go," they asked.

The driver, who always said something, remained silent as he trembled.

Finally he spoke:

-We are friends... aren't we...?

The question was sudden and strange. Despite this, his friends replied:

-Of course we are friends, why wouldn't we be?

"So," he said, "would you mind looking at my feet?"

The three friends looked at his feet.

Just at that instant, two white hands came out of the floor of the car and held tightly to his ankles. Friends screamed as they ran out of the car and left the driver behind.

When they calmed down, they returned to find their friend, but he was nowhere to be found.

They searched the area carefully until one of the women pointed a shaking finger at the vines in the tunnel.

The driver was entangled in them.

Urban legends of Japan
THE PEOPLE Sugisawa  Escondido deep in the mountains of the prefecture of Aomori , therea town called S ugisawa.

Legend has it that one day a man from the village went mad and killed everyone who lived in the village and then took his own life. Nadia knows why she lost her mind, or why she took the lives of all the people who resided there.

As a result of this horrible crime, the village was left empty as the local government decided to leave the town abandoned and denied the events that occurred that day. And finally, they erased all traces of the village on the local maps.

According to legend, it is impossible to reach Sugisawa unless the straight road leading to the mountains is abandoned.

There you will find a warning sign at the entrance that says: "You can enter, but do so at your own risk"

THE RED QR CODE

Normally QR codes are black, however, in districts with red lights it is possible to find these codes on telegraph poles or in the front of shops stuck like graffiti. But when morning comes, these disappear.

These codes should not be read with the phone reader. If you do, your cell phone will be infected with a virus that will slowly force everything to stop working. Also, it will link you to a website that sells vulgar movies. When you open this bright red site, you will see several cursed words written there. Then it will redirect you to a website where you can watch a movie of your own death.

THE CRIMSON GRANDMA

There is an old woman who appears in the girls' restrooms in high school, named Crimson Grandma . When a girl is in the bathroom she hears a voice asking her:

-Do you know the crimson grandmother?

If you answer "yes," this ghost will appear within a week and ask for some water. The only way to get rid of it, is:

-I don't have water to give you.

However, if you mess up and accidentally give her some water, she will drag you to your death.

MARY-SAN

Mary-san is the story of a doll that was abandoned after a family moved in and threw it in the trash by accident.

The doll is said to make several phone calls in which it announces that it is getting closer and closer to you. First it says that it is in the garbage, then that it is in the station near your house and so on until it arrives in front of your home.

Finally you will receive one last call and you will hear a voice saying:

-I'm Mary-san and now I'm right behind you.

Mary-san or Merry-san (as it is called in Japan) is a popular urban legend in Japan that always ends with the phrase " now I'm right behind you . " Added to this, the terror caused by the idea that the doll is slowly approaching where you are, made this story very famous, mainly because nobody knows what happens in the end.

There are various fanfics and illustrations of this character and in 2011 a movie called Mary's Phone Call was released .

Where was this legend born?

One of the first things you might think of after hearing this story is why is there an urban legend with a doll named Mary in Japan?

This is due to the different versions of this legend. In fact, in some cases it is a doll named Riko-chan . Also, the origin of this story is unknown to date, but it is rumored that it may be based on a real person named Yokohama Mary.

After World War II, Japan faced many difficulties, among them, they experienced a shortage of food. As a consequence, many women had to engage in prostitution to survive and one of them was Yokohama Mary . The woman was an old woman who painted her face completely white and wore ruffled dresses, like a doll. He was often seen standing in a particular corner of Yokohama . This caught the attention of the media in the 1980s, when several reports were made about the "strange" people who lived in Tokyo.

Mary disappeared in the 1990s, although it was later revealed that she had moved to a nursing home and is believed to have passed away in 2005.

It is not uncommon to think that someone created the story of Mary-san from this person who dressed like a doll, however, no one knows her true origins.

SUKIMA-ONNNA: THE WOMAN FROM THE HOLLOW

Sukima-onna , also known as the woman in the hole, is a female ghost that appears in any corner of your bedroom.

Legend has it that one day a man felt that someone was watching him from inside his room. However, since the man lived alone, it was evident that no one was there; except for him. Restless, he searched his room, but unsurprisingly he found nothing. He thought someone might be spying on him from outside, yet his curtains were closed. He thought maybe there was a camera in his room or maybe someone had installed an audio device. As he thought about these possibilities, he became even more concerned and decided to search every corner of his room again and then found where the gaze was coming from.

Right in the slim gap between the dresser and the wall a woman was staring at him.

You may have already heard of sukima-onna , as it is a very popular figure not only within Japan, but also in the West.

This ghost or specter appears in the holes in people's bedrooms.

For example, between the dresser and the wall as you just read in the previous story or it can also be under the bed, behind the curtain and in the drawers. No gap is too small for her, and the only way to avoid her gaze is to make sure every little gap is covered. That includes cracks in the floor, wall, and doors.

In Japan, these gaps and / or spaces are believed to be a connection between this world and the other.

Its origin

Its story begins when a samurai, named Negishi Yasumori , who worked in a high administrative position in the Edo period , collected stories and anecdotes for thirty years. These accounts came from various people, including colleagues and elders.

After a while, he wrote ten volumes with one hundred stories each entitled Mimibukuro . It is in these volumes that the first account of S ukima-onna is found .

Three related legends
KUCHISAKE ONNA

Kuchisake-onna is a ghost who assaults high school students when they go home after school. It is said that he wears a red coat regardless of the season of the year and always wears a surgical mask that completely covers his mouth.

If you meet her, she will ask you:

-I'm pretty?

If you answer "yes," she will remove her mask and say:

-What about now?

There you can see that he has a cut in his mouth that goes from ear to ear.

It is said that it is almost impossible to escape from her, because she is very fast and if she manages to catch you, she will take an oz of her coat and leave you a cut from ear to ear as big as hers.

Despite her terrifying figure, the methods of breaking free from her are relatively straightforward. One of them is to answer "maa-maa" (more or less) when asking if she is pretty. This will confuse her and give you time to escape.

Another method is to say "ointment" three times. If you manage to do this, she will hesitate and you will be able to run away. This is because according to her story, the doctor who performed the surgery used a lot of pomade on her hair and it made her sick. It is also said that spraying her with real pomade works, even if you write the word on your hand and show it to her, you will have a chance to run.

Its origin

There are many versions regarding its origin. The best known relates that a woman underwent plastic surgery which went very wrong and left her mouth open. That is why to release his anger he attacks students after school.

It may interest you: All about the Yokai. Japanese monsters and ghosts
This legend began to spread throughout Japan during the spring and summer of 1979, inspiring fear in students across the country. It was so much that during those years police patrols were dispatched to ensure that children returned safely to their homes in Fukushima, Kanagawa prefectures and protection groups were also deployed in Hokkaido.

KASHIMA-SAN

Kashima-san is the story of a woman named K ashima Reiko who suffered both abuse at home and at school. With nowhere to go, the girl decided to commit suicide and threw herself onto the train tracks. The lower part of her body was severed, but she did not die immediately. On the contrary, his torso continued to crawl for some time in search of the severed half of his body.

Kashima Reiko will appear high into the night within three days to all who hear her. She will try to snatch your lower body away, however there are a couple of incantations you can chant to drive her away.

The first day you can chant " kashima-san" three times to make it disappear.

On the second day you can sing "Ka wa kamen no ka shi wa shibito no shi ma wa mamono no ma" . This means "The ka is for the ka of the mask, shi is for the shi of the dead person and ma is to ward off evil from goblins and / or specters."

But on the third day, no matter what you sing, nothing will work.

Finally, and to completely scare her away, you must share Kashima Reiko's story with someone within three days. It is the only way to break his spell.

TEKE TEKE

Teke Teke is one of the best known legends of Japan because it is a story that has taken away the tranquility of many inhabitants of Japan who believe in its existence.

It is about a young woman who was the victim of a joke by her classmates. She was waiting for the train as usual when her companions scared her and made her fall onto the tracks by accident. However, no one helped her so she was run over and her body split in two.

Since then, T Eke Teke is a female ghost who lacks the lower part of his body and his image so terrifying that causes panic anyone who sees it .

Teke teke is a vengeful spirit who crawls with his hands until he reaches the station and attacks with his sharp claws in such a way that he leaves blood marks on his victims. It is also said that she has taken revenge by pushing others to suffer the same as her. So much so, that even if the person is not near the train, she uses her claws and the part in the middle to make it become onemore teke teke .

In Japan (as well as in many other countries), it is a custom to honor with stories and / or legends what happens in their lands. That is why many people have verified that this is a true story in order to eradicate their evil.

There are some fatal cases of fans of the paranormal, who decided to investigate the mystery that surrounds this urban legend and of which no more was known.

It should be noted that kashima-san is an Japanese urban legend that is often linked to kuchisake-onna and teke teke . In fact, the origins of teke teke seem to be in the history of kashima-san , while the latter and kuchisake-onna became popular at the same time. Because of them, in some versions it is said that Kuchisake-onna's real name is Kashima Reiko or that Kashima-san is her daughter.

Although there are many variations regarding the true origin of these spectra, after knowing their stories it is not difficult to see why they are related.

After reading all these legends, especially those that talk about ghosts, we can see that most of them are female entities. This is due to cultural notions of Japan, since, since ancient times and according to the beliefs of the Edo period , women had a greater tendency to become yurei (ghost and / or soul in pain) because of their emotionality that would lead them to exact revenge after his death. Therefore, it is not surprising that, to this day, not only on the big screen, but also in urban and local legends, women are the protagonists.

Japan through its urban legends: from Kuchisake onna to Kisaragi station

Fantastic and horror stories that were once told by word of mouth, like something that happened to someone you know, are now being transmitted through digital spaces. An expert in Japanese folklore tells us about the background and birth of this type of urban legends, and the social changes they represent.

An unknown woman, wearing a mask, comes across a child and asks him: "Am I beautiful?" The frightened child answers yes, and the woman removes her mask. "Now you think so too?" His lips part, opening up to his ears ... Almost every Japanese, of whatever age, has ever heard that story, called Kuchisake onna . In recent years it has also become famous abroad, as an example of a Japanese horror story.

According to Iikura Yoshiyuki, professor at Kokugakuin University and researcher of contemporary oral literature, "The story of Kuchisake onna is the most famous of all purely Japanese urban legends." How is this type of urban legend generated? How does it evolve over time?

Kuchisake onna , a warning about strangers
According to Iikura, at the end of 1978 a rumor began to spread about an elderly farmer from (so they say) Yaotsu, in Gifu prefecture, who claimed to have seen a woman with a mouth from ear to ear in a corner of her garden . "At the beginning of 1979 the newspaper Gifu Nichinichi Shinbun (now Gifu Shinbun ) reported on the rumors of Kuchisake onna , and among the children the story continued to circulate, more and more in detail exaggerated. The woman wore a mask, she wore a red coat .. They even said that he had a sickle in his hand, that he could run a hundred meters in six seconds, that he hated the smell of jelly and that if you gave him a piece of candy he would let you go. "

In just six months, the legend of Kuchisake onna left Gifu and spread to Aomori in the north and Kagoshima in the south. "An important factor in this was the fact that at that time the number of children studying in an academy after school increased a lot. Until then, urban legends had not had much opportunity to leave each school district, but in the academies , which had students from different centers, it was enough for a child to tell about something that had happened in his school for the others to be scared and, thinking that the same could happen in his own center, to tell it in turn to his classmates Some spoke by phone with relatives, and the information was even transmitted through other newspapers and even television networks. "

For children, Kuchisake onna was a terrifying image, and also a warning about strangers. "The academies began their classes in the afternoon, and then the children would flock to the streets and have to return to their homes at night, with what they saw a type of adults as they had never seen before: women with night jobs, people drunk as a vat ... The anxiety that caused them to think that perhaps one of those adults could harm them was projected on the figure of Kuchisake onna ".

"Initially teachers and parents were concerned, and patrolled the streets and routes between the school and the houses. In the early summer of 1979 the legends began to calm down. The striking image of Kuchisake onna , however, remained in the collective imagination , and was established as one of the prototypical ghosts of Japan. "

The first wave: rumors among the young
In the second half of the 1970s, when the Kuchisake onna legend began to spread , Japan's economic structures were changing; vehicles, telephone services, television and other infrastructures that would allow an urban cultural life had been established.

The expression "urban legend" was introduced in Japan in 1988, when a translation of The Vanishing Hitchhiker: American Urban Legends and Their Meanings was published. work of the American folklorist Jan Harold Brunvand. The young and energetic Japanese researchers of the moment translated the work to throw a stone into the quiet pool of Japanese folklore studies, until then based on ancient tales and traditional legends, with the purpose of indicating that investigating such rumors was equivalent to investigating the state of contemporary cities.

Brunvand defined urban legend as "an original story that happens to a friend of a friend, in the course of his everyday urban life." Stories like the hitchhiker who was actually a ghost, or the murderer who hides under the bed. Ghost hitchhikers are a motif that dates back to the 19th century and horse wagons, but they adapted as motor cars entered society, and the development of newspapers and other media facilitated their spread. For example, events that were read in the newspaper or heard on the radio were recounted in every corner of the United States as if they had happened there, adding local characteristics.

"In Japan in the second half of the eighties, word of mouth was everything. Suddenly, for some reason, high school and high school students were standing in long lines at ice cream parlor chains like Hobson's or 31 (Baskin-Robbins), or they all started carrying Boston bags. In urban areas, among students, when word spreads that something is fashionable, information spreads in the blink of an eye. This is an economy in which, On the way to the bubble the bubble, young people have achieved greater purchasing power: high school students and university students work part-time in chain restaurants and twenty-four-hour stores and make their own money. The marketing of the companies began in earnest to take into account that word of mouth from children. "

A representative example of the success of this type of marketing is Lotte's Koara no māchi (March of the Koalas) cookies . A rumor spread among high school students that it was lucky to find a koala with eyebrows. As a result, the company expanded the variety of koala designs, creating a best-selling brand that celebrated its 35th anniversary in 2019.

"Other examples of the legends of that moment assure that it brings luck to touch the red loincloth of the character that appears drawn on the run in the trucks of the Sagawa transport company; and that the couples who get on a boat from the Shinobazu pond, in Ueno park, break. Magazines and other media picked up rumors like these and word of mouth in their posts, and presented them as 'urban legends.' Writers collected these kinds of stories and purposely exaggerated them, to generate a boom . A good example is the 'dog with a human face', which was presented by the famous Popteen magazine. It was said of him that he spoke like a person, that his face was like that of a middle-aged man, and that he was capable of chasing a car at speeds in excess of 100 kilometers per hour. "

"These urban legends reached the peak of their popularity in the early 1990s, and from 1995 they began to disappear. The Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake and the terrorist attack of the group Aum Shinrikyō with sarin gas in the Tokyo subway took away people wanted to talk about ghosts. The media completely stopped talking about it. "

The Second Wave: Internet Horror Stories
At the beginning of the 21st century, urban legends experienced a second boom. "The first wave of urban legends came from the hand of rumors of children exaggerated by television, magazines and other media. As of 2000, 'text pages', such as blogs and the like, began to proliferate. A dedicated blog The collection of old urban legends became so popular that it was even published as a book; later all sorts of similar works on urban legends began to be published. Those who had been students at that time acquired them out of nostalgia, and the other generations became they were interested in the subject, helping its success. "

On the other hand, magazines and television networks have also published interesting stories that appeared on Ni channeru (Channel 2, a popular Internet forum), which have been forming a new corpus of Japanese urban legends. Well known are Kunekune the story of the strange white object found by an elementary school student in a rice field in a rural area; Kotoribako , the cursed birdcage; or Hasshaku sama , a terrible female monster of more than two meters. "These are horror stories that are too long to be told orally. These kinds of legends are constantly being generated on the Internet."

More or less from 2010, a new type of participatory stories began to appear, focused on social networks. One of them, The Kisaragi Station , has been counting for more than ten years, going from the original Nichanneru to Twitter. The origin of the story was published in 2004 in Nichanneru "I got on the train in Shinhamamatsu. It was the same train I always use, but we arrived at a station whose name did not ring a bell. What can I do?" It was posted as a query, with questions and answers, and the story continued from there.

"Someone summarizes the story on a separate page, and its contents are republished. The story is written in a false voice, to create the impression of being a conversation on the scene. People participate immediately, connecting to history and helping to create new urban legends. That is the main characteristic of the second wave in the web age . Also, many of them are horror stories. There is also, I think, the feeling of participating in a game of chase virtual game, a ghost simulation game or similar in which a mystery is experienced in the real world. "

Compared with urban legends that were previously transmitted mainly orally, stories that do so digitally oscillate between two extremes: they either barely change, or they change radically. "Since the oral transmission is based each time on the memory of the narrator, even if there are small variations, the plot does not change much. In the case of digital transmission, you can copy and paste the text, but you can also change everything that one wants to. The form of diffusion does not depend on time or distance either. The pace at which stories from abroad have also been accelerated. "

Starting in 2000, the legend of Kuchisake onna also began to spread on the Internet. In South Korea, for example, it adopted different shades from the original Japanese version, such as the red color of the mask. "In Okinawa, Taiwan, South Korea, China and other countries it is said that monsters can only walk in a straight line, so the Korean Kuchisake onna cannot turn a corner, or even climb stairs. boyfriend, a man with a shaved head, also wearing a mask. As legends are exported to countries with urban lifestyles, the stories are gradually adapted to incorporate elements of the culture of that place. "

Internet takotsubo culture and fake news
With the second wave of urban legends, some creators also appeared who made "art" of these stories. "Seki Akio, an ex-comedian, popular since 2006, is a representative example. He rose to fame originally from a variety show, in which he did a space in which various celebrities told urban legends. His motto," You decide whether to believe or not to believe ", he became very popular, and today he continues to perform in concerts and shows such as Yarisugi toshi densetsu (Excessive Urban Legends).

Recently the most popular are the videos of youtubers that analyze urban legends. "For example, the story called Elevator to the other world . If a person rides in an elevator of a building with more than ten floors and presses the buttons in a certain sequence, he can reach the other world. The youtuber in question tries it in reality".

Urban legends, which were once transmitted as if they had happened "to a friend of a friend", in this digital age are spreading even more widely and rapidly, as if they were fashionable games. However, according to Iikura, there are fewer and fewer urban legends that most people come into contact with.

"This is due to the takotsubo effect of the Internet: people who visit a web page tend to be grouped with people of the same opinion, and do not come into contact with other groups. Furthermore, fewer and fewer debate the authenticity of the information; they only believe in what they like, and consider false what they do not like, without questioning the possible interest that may exist in the ambiguity between what is true and what is false ".

Iikura regrets that political measures are currently being used internationally to project anxiety into people's reality. "It is something that applies to illegal immigrants, to China, to South Korea, even to Japan. Precisely because there is a sense of security in the idea that projecting that anxiety on Kuchisake onna or other ghosts is not the same as doing it on real people. . It seems to me that all over the world urban legends are losing ground. Across the globe there is a sense of blockage, and a desire for certainty amid vague insecurity. As it is, the growing number is ironic. of people who resort to fake news and the type of information that specialists call urban legends. "

Can central bankers talk too much?

Imagine you are a journalist trying to reassure your bosses that you will hit a tight deadline. What would be more effective: a forceful but brief commitment that you will do whatever is needed to get the job done, which leaves them in the dark on all the things that might go wrong along the way? Or a plan detailing every step you will take—but in which they can spot unnerving risks? That resembles the choice central banks face as they try to convince financial markets and the public that they will meet their goals. Over the past decade their preference has been clear: the more transparency and detail, the better. In 2011 America's Federal Reserve began holding press conferences after its monetary-policy meetings. It started publishing the range of rate-setters' economic forecasts the following year. Across the rich world, forward guidance on the path of interest rates has become part of the toolkit. Central bankers make ever more speeches, bringing once-hidden debates out into the open. Some tweet their views.

The theoretical justification for all the talk is strong. The more markets understand how the central bank will react to events, the better they anticipate future policy. Conditions in financial markets should immediately tighten or loosen in response to economic news, making central bankers' jobs easier. It is as if setting out your plan to your boss makes it easier to implement. Today, however, the theory is being tested. The European Central Bank (ecb) meets on October 24th, after The Economist goes to press, amid a very public row about monetary policy. In September the ecb said that it would restart quantitative easing (qe), the purchase of bonds with newly created money, and that it would keep buying assets until inflation picks up from its current level of 1% towards the bank's aim of close to 2%. Hawks such as Klaas Knot, the head of the Dutch central bank, have been unusually vocal in their dissent. Bond yields, which move inversely to prices, first fell as markets digested the ecb's guidance. But the bickering has since sent them in the other direction. Market pricing now also reflects expectations of how the political struggle over open-ended qe will play out. Investors have spotted a flaw in the plan.

In America the Federal Reserve may cut interest rates for a third time this year on October 30th. It has been accused by economists at Goldman Sachs, a bank, of constructing a "hall of mirrors" in its communications with markets. The Fed, the argument goes, has this year simultaneously signalled its intentions to bond markets while taking its cues from them. But bond yields are a prediction of what the Fed will do, not an instruction. As a result, the Fed and the markets have entered a pessimistic spiral, while the real economy has been ignored. In its eagerness to be in touch with markets, the Fed has forgotten that it is in the lead.

Central banks everywhere must also work out how to offer forward guidance when facing sharply divergent forks in the road. A trade truce between America and China could transform the economic outlook. A no-deal Brexit could cause chaos in Britain that spills over to the rest of Europe. Telling markets what to expect of policy is much harder when prediction involves choosing between black and white.

Might it help, therefore, for central banks to talk a little less? Microeconomists have long known that ambiguity can have strategic uses. Employment contracts, for example, do not specify every action an employee must take, nor all the obligations of an employer, possibly because it may be better to leave room for either side to punish the other's bad behaviour. In recent years Bengt Holmström of mit, who in 2016 won the Nobel prize for economics, has argued that central-bank opacity has its uses in credit markets. Most of the time, he argues, these markets, unlike stockmarkets, are "information-insensitive"—they do not respond much to news.

In contrast to stocks, there is no upside for the lender when things go especially well, and default is a remote risk, especially when loans are adequately collateralised. "A state of 'no questions asked' is the hallmark of money-market liquidity," he argues. In a panic, however, money-markets dry up as the risks loom larger. Lenders find themselves having to scrutinise every transaction. Restoring stability might require a promise that is light on detail, and thus hard to pick apart. At the worst of the euro zone's sovereign-debt crisis, for instance, Mario Draghi, the head of the ecb, pledged to do "whatever it takes" to keep the single currency safe. Mr Holmström also notes that when the Fed provided emergency lending to banks during the financial crisis, it did not disclose which institutions received support, for fear that any associated stigma could provoke bank runs.

Too much information
Might a similar logic carry across to central bankers' everyday goals, such as targeting inflation? Inflation expectations, like financial panics, can prove self-fulfilling. Some economists reckon that central banks' promises to keep inflation low may have become so credible that the public rarely revises its expectations in light of economic news—another case of "no questions asked". But the analogy breaks down when it comes to interest rates. Rates vary and markets have to expect something. Central banks might as well steer such expectations. The limits of communication are best seen as the latest round in the decades-old battle between those who want monetary policy to be set by rules, and those favouring discretion. The clearest forward guidance would be a fully transparent algorithm that relates interest rates to economic data. But such a mechanical "reaction function" exists only in economic models. In reality, policymakers have to use their judgment, meaning their decisions are inherently uncertain. As long as that is true, there is a limit to how much more transparency can make interest rates predictable. And, as the recent experience of central banks shows, talking can have its downsides. It is worth pondering when silence might be golden.

Both were wounded, Joanne paralyzed forever with a bullet in her spine.

Again the slugs were readily identified, and now detectives knew they had a random killer on their hands. The gunman seemed to favor girls with long, dark hair, and there was speculation that the shooting of Denaro in October may have been an "accident." The young man's hair was shoulder length; a gunman closing on him from behind might have mistaken Carl Denaro for a woman in the darkness.

Virginia Voskerichian, an Armenian exchange student, was walking toward her home in Forest Hills on March 8, when a man approached and shot her in the face, killing her instantly.

I am deeply hurt by your calling me a weman–hater [sic]. I am not. But I am a monster. I am the Son of Sam. . . . I love to hunt. Prowling the streets looking for fair game—tasty meat. The weman [sic] of Queens are the prettyest [sic] of all. . . .

A check of parking ticket records traced an old Ford Galaxy belonging to one David Berkowitz, of Pine Street, Yonkers.

"I only wanted to kill them.") A virgin at the time of his arrest, Berkowitz was prone to fabricate elaborate lies about his bedroom prowess, all the while intent upon revenge against the women who habitually rejected him. When not engaged in stalking female victims, Berkowitz reportedly was an accomplished arsonist: a secret journal listed details of 300 fires for which he was allegedly responsible around New York. In his conclusion, Dr. Abrahamson described his subject as a homicidal exhibitionist who meant his crimes to be a public spectacle and harbored fantasies of "dying for a cause."

There is another side of David Berkowitz, however, and it surfaced shortly after his arrest, with allegations of his membership in a satanic cult. In letters mailed from prison, Berkowitz described participation in a New York cult affiliated with the lethal "Four P Movement," based in California. He revealed persuasive inside knowledge of a California homicide, unsolved since 1974, and wrote that "There are other Sams out there—God help the world."

According to the story told by Berkowitz in prison, two of neighbor Sam Carr's sons were also members of the killer cult that specialized in skinning dogs alive and gunning victims down on darkened streets. Brother Michael Carr died in a single-car crash in October 1979, and New York authorities reopened the "Sam" case after his death.

The latest near-death experience for Berkowitz had been a July 10 prison assault that left his throat slashed, requiring fifty-six stitches to close the wound. Less talkative following his narrow escape, Berkowitz still agreed to a January 1982 meeting with attorney Harry Lipsig. In that conversation, he referred to the killer cult as follows:

Q: You had some connection with the Church of Scientology, did you not?
A: It wasn't exactly that. But I can't go into it. I really can't.
Q: Were you connected in any way or an adherent or convert of the Church of Scientology?
A: No, not that way. It was an offshoot, fringe-type thing.
Q: Were John and Michael [Carr] with the Church of Scientology?
A: Well, not really that church. But something along that line. A very devious group.
Q: Did this devious group have a name?
A: I can't disclose it.
Q: Roughly, how large would you say its membership was?
A: Twenty.
Q: Were they all residents of the New York metropolitan area?
A: No.
Q: Were they spread across the nation?
A: Yes.
Q: Did they meet on occasion?
A: Yes, but I really can't say more without counsel.

Investigation of the alleged cult continues, supported by testimony from convicted cannibal-killer Stanley Dean Baker, but no further indictments have been filed to date.

10 MOST DANGEROUS GANGS OF ALL TIME
From groups of misfits and misunderstood kids who may cause mischief in the street—to the powers that be who practice human trafficking, senseless killing, and the pursuit of world domination—we count down the 10 most dangerous gangs of all time.

10. The Area Boys

In Lagos, Nigeria, there's a group of teenagers and forgotten youth that roam the streets—pedaling extortion and drug violence. While they may not be as organized as other groups on this list, The Area Boys are known for their rampant, unprovoked attacks on the innocent, simply to build their name and push fear through the communities where they exist. As this group grows, it's important to note that they will likely continue to organize themselves and become a much greater threat.

9. The Black Guerilla Family

The Black Guerilla Family is a vigilant and zealous political movement that seeks to overthrow the United States Government. Founded in 1966, this group has also gone by Black Family and Black Vanguard, as well as weathered a longstanding rivalry against the Aryan Brotherhood. Unlike most of the groups on this list, this gang started in prison—when George Jackson and W.L. Nolen were serving time at San Quentin State Prison. Among other social incidents, the Black Guerilla Family are famous for the alleged targeting of Baltimore police officers in 2015 alongside The Bloods and The Crips.

8. Cosa Nostra

Now, this next group comes in at number 8, but before we go any further, it's important to note its size. The Cosa Nostra gang, known for working with other international crime organizations to traffic drugs, has over 250,000 affiliates worldwide, with 25,000 dedicated members. Another term for the Sicilian Mafia, Cosa Nostra got its start in New York's lower east side as many Italian immigrants came to the United States. Having survived several Mafia Wars, and living through all sorts of smuggling famines and rivalries, it's safe to say that this group will be around for a long time.

7. The Bloods

Known for their specialization and their recruiting tactics, there are some pretty compelling reasons as to why the Bloods have been thwarting the LAPD and the FBI's attempts to crack down on them in recent years. The Bloods hide in plain sight, as they wear red clothes and bandanas—showing no fear to law enforcement whatsoever. In addition to clothes, the Bloods are famous for their use of graffiti, jewelry, and gang symbols. They also have a knack for competing against other gangs of a different color

6. The Crips

A primarily African-American gang founded in Los Angeles in 1969, the Crips have turned a once small gang into one of the biggest crime groups alive. While many other crime groups have declined in recent years, the Crips appear to still be growing. As can be seen in the pictures, they are known and easily recognized because of their attire—wearing mostly blue clothes and bandanas. The Crips, like the bloods, make their profit off of murders, drugs and robberies.

5. The Yakuzas

In case you didn't know, the Yakuzas aren't just a part of Hollywood cinema. They are very, very real. What makes them so threatening is not their enormous stature, with over 102,000 members worldwide, or their penchant for cutting off their own fingers as a form of apology, but the fact that they are known for being incredibly organized, and can mobilize quickly to handle large crimes. Yakuzas will even terrorize larger corporations by buying small amounts of stock, earning a right to go to a shareholder's meeting, and then harassing and scaring off potential stockholders to weaken a corporation's strength.

4. Los Zetas

The Zetas are probably the inspiration for every modern Mexican drug story. And when killing is part of your daily business, it's not hard to understand. As of 2012, the Zetas had control of over eleven states in Mexico, making it one of the most powerful drug cartel and political forces in the country. The Zetas also have ties to the United States, and traffic tons of illegal drugs over the border every single year. The Zetas have been known to behead, torture and terrorize their rivals to scare off any other drug cartels.

3. The Aryan Brotherhood

Want to know why The Aryan Brotherhood shot up to the number 3 spot on this list? They account for over 25% of prison murders in the US—even though the only account for 0.1% of the prison system. That's like inviting an alligator into a chicken coop. In fact, the prolific murder rate of The Aryan Brotherhood is kind of the central point of their rank on this list. They have about 20,000 members in the US alone, and one of the requirements to get into The Aryan Brotherhood is that you have to murder someone of their choice—and they have 20,000 members. We're just going to let that sink in.

2. The Mara Salvatrucha Gang

Truth be told, the deadly penultimate anchor on this list is much more frightening than what is conventionally thought of as a gang. The Mara Salvatrucha is one of the deadliest gangs in the world by a long shot. Made notorious for the ugly pursuits in drug smuggling, theft, black market arms dealings, contract killing, human trafficking, and the continuous assault on all police forces, what started as a simple gang in California has now grown to encompass more than 70,000 members worldwide. The other gangs can just stick to their petty drug crimes, because these guys are the real deal. With reports indicating their link to the death of many women and children, the Mara Salvatrucha gang is subject of many nightmares the world over. Try sleeping knowing these people exist.

1. The Sinaloa Cartel

Led by the notorious drug lord billionaire 'El Chapo'—who was recently arrested and turned over to the United States, The Sinaloa Cartel is one of the most dangerous gangs in the whole world. Why? Well, for one, they've been at war with Los Zeta for years, and second, El Chapo has done so well as a drug king that Forbes labeled him as one of the world's most powerful people. That's definitely a credit these other gangs can't claim. Add to that the fact that the DEA has named El Chapo the Godfather of the Drug World, and 'street cred' is starting to look like it needs to take a lesson from The Sinaloa Cartel. The Sinaloa Cartel all but has total control of the Nuevo Laredo region leading into Laredo Texas, where over 40% of drug trafficking into the US takes place. As far as their violent brutality is concerned, The Sinaloa Cartel isn't so much as famous for their casualties related to their sprees of theft and crime as they are for starting massacres and wars that have ravaged thousands of lives in multiple countries. It's safe to say that this is without a doubt the most dangerous gang in existence today—even with El Chapo behind bars.

1. Our pets see things we can't
Have you ever wondered why your cat has 'mad moments' where it seems to chase nothing, or your dog barks at thin air? The truth is, they may well be reacting to something out of our visual range. It's been
known for some time that certain creatures like insects and fish see ultraviolet light, often using it as a guide to find their next meal, or to avoid becoming one. Now new research has revealed a far greater number of critters see some degree of UV, including cats and dogs, which might help explain some of their more unusual antics!

2. Chickens eye up new state of matter
As if being the closest living relative of the T-rex didn't come with enough kudos, chicken's eyes could host a unique state of matter. Known as 'disordered hyperuniformity', the phenomenon has been studied in other materials, like plasma and liquid helium, for several years, but this is the first time it has been observed in a living organism. A cross between liquid and crystal states, disordered hyperuniform materials appear to have a haphazard structure on a micro level, but on a wider scale demonstrate rigid uniformity. Birds may have evolved this ordered chaos to get optimum vision out of small eyes.

3. Earth's forests are being watched
Using 500 million images captured by NASA's Landsat satellites, as well as reports from the ground, the Global Forest Watch is keeping a close eye on Earth's forests. All the raw data is fed into the Google Earth Engine, with algorithms created by the University of Maryland. The resulting maps reveal the shocking extent of deforestation in near real-time, with the images of threatened rainforest updated monthly. In the
visualisation above red areas show the estimated 2.3 million square kilometres (888,035 square miles) of forest lost between 2000 and 2012.

4. Dark Chocolate really is good for us
Chocolate might not be the first thing you'd think your doctor would prescribe, but a recent Dutch study has found a little dark chocolate can help ward off heart problems. While we've known for some time that
cocoa has nutritional benefi ts, we haven't understood why. This latest research revealed that participants
eating 70 grams (2.5 ounces) of dark chocolate per day over a month experienced improvements in vascular function. Arteries were more flexible and fewer white blood cells stuck to vessel walls – both of
which reduce the risk of atherosclerosis (artery hardening) – the biggest cause of heart attacks.

5. The Moon has a new crater
Astronomers in Spain have observed the biggest-ever impact on our Moon. Predicted to have weighed in at 400 kilograms (900 pounds), the asteroid was travelling at 61,000 kilometres (40,000 miles) per hour when it struck our satellite last September, resulting in collision energy equivalent to 15 tons of TNT.

6. Phones take on tsunamis
Although mobile phones are often lauded as being 'lifesaving' gadgets, it is generally more figurative than
literal. Now a new mobile technology is transforming the ubiquitous device into an early-warning system, which sends text messages to those most in harm's way during a natural disaster. Developed by RegPoint, the innovative system is being launched in India this April, in conjunction with the Indian National Centre for
Ocean Information Services (INCOIS). It will send an SMS alert to those signed up in at-risk areas immediately after a tsunami or typhoon has been detected and offer guidance of where to go and what to do.

7. Bubbles could fight urban pollution
With pollution levels in cities around the globe ever rising, we've seen many proposals to generate cleaner air for city dwellers. Few are as extreme as the idea pitched by architectural firm Orproject though. They think the answer lies in urban parks enclosed in huge bubble-like domes made of light, transparent material based on natural structures like leaf veins. Because the gardens within the bubble are sealed, temperature and humidity can be monitored and controlled year-round and the air can be kept free of fumes and other contaminants outside. As well as public parks, the bubbles could also be adapted to sit over school
playgrounds or apartment roof gardens.

8. Augmented reality is ready for the battlefield
Helmets have always been designed to save lives, but today's most advanced models do far more than just deflect incoming projectiles. Indeed, the Q-Warrior helmet-mounted display can help us see in the dark, provide detailed route maps through a war zone and even identify friend from foe – all on a mini screen directly in front of our eyes. The technology is likely to be issued to commanding officers on covert operations initially to help co-ordinate a team, but could one day be a part of every soldier's kit.

9. There is a new speed king in town
After several years of chasing the title, the Hennessey Venom GT has staked a new claim as the world's fastest production car. It reached 435.3 kilometres (270.5 miles) per hour on a NASA runway. Boasting a V8 engine with a ground-shaking output of 1,200 brake horsepower, it has just about bumped the archrival Bugatti Veyron off the top spot, which has held the record since 2010 at 431.1 kilometres (267.8 miles) per hour.

10. Earth's crust is 4.4 billion years old
It's difficult to wrap your head around it, but this blue crystal is the oldest part of our world ever found. Researchers estimate it formed just 160 million years after our Solar System was born, 4.4 billion years ago. Discovered in western Australia, the staggering age has now been confirmed using two dating techniques. Having previously measured the decay of uranium particles into lead, more recently the zircon
crystal underwent atom-probe tomography that mapped out its atomic structure; both arrived at the same age. The team believe this discovery lends weight to the theory that Earth was hit by a planet-sized body in its formative years, leading to the Moon and a cooling process that resulted in our oceans.

TOP 15 SCARY HIDDEN THINGS IN VIDEO GAMES

15. Paper Mario
Though nearly all games created in the Mario universe are created for younger players, many adults find fun in the countless games for years to come. Still, some small easter eggs or mishaps seem a bit too dark for the original intended audience of children.

Especially one house from Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door. In the U.S version of the game there's a house in the back alley of Rougeport Main Square, in this house it appears as though someone has broken in and ransacked the place. This alone is enough to be unsettling to an extent, a break-in and robbery attempt is quite an adult concept.

However, the original Japanese version is even worse. There appears to be red stains covering the floor and walls, and there's a chalk outline apparently in the shape of Toad. Obviously, this implies a heinous crime. Although the scene isn't focused on, it is really dark for such an innocent game and is considered to be one of the most upsetting easter eggs in video game history, even all these years later.

14. The Infinity Killer
This easter egg is seen as more of a simple fact by some players, as it is so integrated into the game. Still the way everything is presented, makes for a great entry. In the GTA 5 universe in December 1999, 8 male joggers were murdered and buried in San Andreas.

These murders were deemed the Infinity Murders after the killers obsession with the number 8 and his infamous quote "8 is just infinity turned sideways". Merle Abrahams was the psychopath responsible for this event and though he is never seen in the game, he is mentioned various times and nearly his entire backstory has been pieced together thanks to Easter Eggs and fan theories.

The clues to this character include graffiti on rocks, newspaper clippings, and a message left inside Merle's own home. The simultaneous absence and strong presence of this killer is what makes his story truly creepy to players and fans.

13. Black & White 2: Whispered Names
The Black & White game series blends real time strategy and God game elements. It was originally released in 2005, though this Easter Egg comes from it's sequel a few years later. When the game is played after 10:00pm the game will whisper your name in a very ghostly and disheartening voice.

The game uses an algorithm that takes a variety of stored names and then compares it to your screen name or profile name to correctly call out to you. This is certainly scary for first time players that do no expect the feature. Even worse is imagining this happening with headphones in as you play alone in the middle of the night.

12. Assassin's Creed II, The Kraken
The Assassins Creed game series is best known for being historically accurate when it comes to general details and technology. Of course there are some fantasy features that makes the game far from perfect when it comes to history, but this detail was extremely unrealistic compared to most of the game, which makes it considerably scary to some players.

While solving a puzzle in a specific tomb of the game, a massive Kraken can be seen motioning through the water below. This game is set in Renaissance era Italy, so the mystical beast feels rather out of place. This isn't the only time that the creature makes an appearance, either. In Assassin's Creed 4, the Kraken is seen destroying a shark outside an abandoned ship. This location makes much more sense as the game features more pirate-like themes, still the fact that this hard to ignore creature is barely discussed or featured doesn't help it's case.

11. Animal Crossing & Harvest Moon
The community game Animal Crossing features villages where the players live with anthropomorphic animals and carry out various tasks like building items and decorating locations. The games have been known to be quite obsessive for players thanks to open-ended game play and the community interaction.

In the game, however, if you watch the TV at 3:33 am a small dark alien appears and suggests that it is watching you. In media, 3:33 am is often associated with evil, the spirit world, extraterrestrial abduction and more. Though the scenes are always short and relatively harmless, it's still unsettling for what is supposed to be a childrens game.

In Harvest Moon, a game very similar to Animal Crossing, something similar happens with the TV. However, in this case it occurs at 4:44 am and instead of a little alien stalking you, you see the number 4 repeated over and over again in both English and Japanese lettering. In Japanese culture the time 4:44 am holds the same meaning as 3:33 am for American culture. Additionally, the number 4 is meant to symbolize death. A very morbid warning for such a light hearted game.

10. Half Life 2: The Standard Zombie
The Half-Life series began in the late 1990's and features various mutants or zombie-like creatures. The Standard Zombie is the most common creature or monster in the game series and it involves a standard Headcrab attaching to a victim's brain and taking over their nervous system to essentially control their body.

The zombie's are already a sore sight being grotesque and only partially human. However, to make them even worse they constantly create guttural noises of despair that sound uncomfortably human. Specifically when you set one on fire, their screams almost sound like words. Apparently a lot of players agreed with this notion because it was eventually discovered and shared by many that this dialogue was actual human speech reversed.

When edited to play forward, the zombie's scream in pain "Help. God help me", which makes the idea of these poor victims even more tough to get through. Many players obviously see them as mindless enemies but playing this human voice with the action gives a "real life" aspect that many were not prepared for.

9. Ratman Dens
Doug Rattman is a character from the game series Portal. Rattman began as an Aperture Science employee. After some conflict he eventually came to live in the Test Chambers and maintenance rooms of the facilities as his sanity quickly deteriorated. He spent much of his time scribbling on the walls of the chambers and the remains of his presence can be experienced by players as they travel through the long abandoned locations.

In Portal, his scribblings give information about his obsession with Companion Cube, directions and warnings for the player, and of course the popular phrase "the cake is a lie". In Portal 2, the messages prove Rattmans survival and help guide the general story forward. Despite how useful the Rat Dens are to the player and story, they still provide a creepy aspect simply by demonstrating the insanity of a once brilliant man, as well as the horrible living conditions he was forced to endure.

8. Luigi's Shadow
This one is also known as "hanging Luigi" and fans have debated for years whether it's a true creepy easter egg, or just an inconvenient glitch. In the game Luigi's Mansion, this scene can be found just after the Boss Battle of Area 3. Luigi finds his way to the telephone room and answers two phone calls, during the second call a very cinematic lightning flash illuminates the room.

Luigi's shadow, which is cast upon the wall, is distorted in a way that apparently shows Luigi hanging. Again, it's still unconfirmed whether this is a true easter egg that comes off a little too dark for a child's game, or a simple glitch that made for great lore years after the release of the game.

7. Fatal Frame Screensavers
The Fatal Frame game series is all about using film to fight evil spirits. The series has received acclaim over the years and even has various spin-off media related to the concept. One of the most memorable aspects of the series though, is the featured screensavers that double as easter eggs and jumpscares.

Basically, if the player leaves the game idle for more than 5 minutes, a screensaver appears to scare the player. In Fatal Frame 1, the image was bloody handprints. In the second and third versions of the game, effectively disturbing ghost faces are used. Considering the first game was released in 2001, this was new and unique for it's time and helped create the idea of interactive horror games that step into the real world, even if only for a second.

6. World of Warcraft: Children of Goldshire
The World of Warcraft series is an online interactive gaming community with fantasy characters and endless quests. The WoW platform was initially released in 2004 and has had gamers hooked and interested ever since with expansion packs, updates and more. This Easter Egg has many layers to it which make it not only unsettling but intriguing as well.

The Goldshire Children are a group of 6 school aged children that travel together in a sort of pack. They can be found in and around Goldshire in Elwynn Forest but they never go far from their home in Stormwind City. The children's names are Cameron, John, Jose, Lisa, Dana and Aaron. When they travel together they appear to not only walk in sync but also never breaking the shape of a pentagram which faces different directions depending on the day.

Theories suggest that the characters are inspired by Children of the Corn, a classic horror film based on Satan  worshipping orphans. If you follow the children to their home, they form their pentagram shape and simply stare forward. Allegedly various sounds can be heard while in this setting. Everything from a banshee scream, and C'Thun saying, "You... Will... Die." to a ghost howling or a woman crying have said to be heard in this location.

5. Timesplitters 2: Mission Failure
Timesplitters is a first person shooter game released in the early 2000's. Mission Failure is a mysterious easter egg that occurs in the second game of the series. When the player fails a mission either by losing their health points, falling into a bottomless chasm, or failing an objective in Story mode, Challenge mode, or Arcade League.

After the character "dies" if the restart screen is left unattended for a period of time, a slow, deep and unnerving audio track is played over the idle screen. Clearly, it sounds like something from a nightmare. Eventually fans became curious and sped up the audio track to find that it is actually Captain Ash's dialogue from the beginning of the Aztec Ruins level slowed down significantly to create this dreamy and spooky audio. While the backstory for this isn't that creepy or even mysterious, the general presence of the audio before players were able to edit it caused a lot of debate and even fear.

4. Doom 2: Romero's Head
This Easter Egg is seen as comical by some, and downright gross by others. The Doom series first began in the early 90's and includes related novels, comics, board game, and film adaptations. In Doom 2, MAP30: Icon of Sin, the easter egg is planted as a final boss. Usually what is known as "The Icon of Sin" must be hit with a rocket and damaged significantly to finish the level.
In this case, the Icon is an image of John Romero's head. Romero is a designer and programmer for the game. The only way to see it is to use the idclip cheat code and go behind the face of the final boss. Additionally, it's not just an image of his head. It is clearly severed, dripping blood and placed upon a spike and features some disturbing audio of Romero's voice in reverse.

3. Batman: Arkham Knight
When it comes to Batman, be it comics, animated series, movies or video games, the Joker provides creators with a perfect place to make things absolutely horrifying. One of the scariest scenes to feature the Joker comes from Batman: Arkham Knight. The game begins after the Joker has died and his body is being prepared for cremation. An already unsightly scene gets even better (or worse) as the game prompts the player to start the incinerator.

As flames engulf the joker he begins to scream in pain. Shortly after he jumps forward to expose crispy skin and his signature laugh. Prompting the player to interact truly brings them into the game and then serves a classic and detailed jumpscare that remains popular.

2. Undertale: Gaster
Undertale is a role-playing indie game released in 2015 that immediately grew a massive fan base. Created entirely by game developer Toby Fox, the detailed game takes the player on a creative, emotional, and often terrifying journey. This game is basically known for it's lore, hidden details, alternate endings, changing levels and easter eggs. Gaster is a character discussed in the game that is almost an Easter Egg of his own, because while his existence is confirmed he is never seen and some factors of the game hint his is still alive.

Two of the most popular Gaster related Easter Eggs are known as "Gasters Theme" and "The Encounter". Undertale has a hidden value in it's code called the 'fun value'. This value ranges from 1 to 100 and is set randomly by the game upon startup. This number determines certain events in the game. If the value is set at 65 while you're in the Snowdin level, you can access a new area which allows you to play "test" versions of songs from the game.

One of these songs is called 'Gaster's Theme'. Once you play it, it continues for the remainder of your presence here and you cannot change it. Of course this is an obvious reference to Gaster and the fact that the player loses control of the game here implies that Gaster has some power over the code of the game. Speaking of the code of the game, another popular aspect of Undertale is the players ability to alter the game by editing the code or save files.

One feature allows you to edit the save file and set the room you spawn into as room 264. When you arrive in room 264, a message is shared in the Wingdings font, which is known exclusively as Gaster's font. Additionally, some disturbing music and audio is played over the message. When translated the message reads; "Entry 17: Dark, darker, yet darker. The darkness keeps growing. The shadow is cutting deeper. Photon readings negative.

1.Star Fox: Out of this Dimension
The Star Fox series is a classic, with it's first release in 1993. In the game while flying through open space and shooting at asteroids, a very peculiar looking asteroid will cross your path. If you successfully shoot this, the game appears to glitch in a very trippy way and you are taken to what can only be described as another dimension. Coincidentally this location is known as "Out of this Dimension".

While here, things move in a strange and fluid manner, the asteroids have faces on them, and the sound is distorted. The mysterious location is known to be infinite, though no other facts are clear. It is apparently outside of the games universe and "outside of existence as we know it". Players have described the level as inescapable and many deem it the alternate ending of the game.
The dimension does not appear in any other Star Fox games, though it is similar to the later introduced "Warp Zones". Aside from the general confusing vibe of the location, it is said to be unsettling because it focuses on the unknown and dangerous expanse of space and even reality.
