Haadyai - A Small City With Big Adventures

HAADYAI, May 4 (Bernama) -- "Sawatdi khah, khor hai len Songkran hai sanuk khah!"(Hello, enjoy the Songkran festival!)

Thus did a staff member of the Asian Hotel, where the writer was staying, greet the writer as she was about to walk out to town.

When the writer visited Haadyai and experienced the Songkran festival for the first time on April 13, it seemed like a trip to a new dimension.

The writer had previously only heard of the festive city from the accounts of relatives and friends who had visited it.

Therefore, the writer did not want to miss out on the chance to explore the city, as part of the "MET Fam Trip to Haadyai & Beyond" expedition recently organised by the Tourism Authority of Thailand.

But what exactly is the attraction of Haadyai, especially for visitors from Malaysia and Singapore?

THE "NEARNESS" FACTOR

For Malaysians, the main reason for their frequent visits to Haadyai could be because the city, located in the Songkhla region, is `just nearby.'

The fact that Haadyai is only 40 km from the Malaysian border at Bukit Kayu Hitam may also be one reason why some Malaysians prefer to visit it instead of Padang Besar near Perlis.

They can also take a break to rest or shop in Danok, located in Sadao district, on their way to Haadyai.

The writer's companion noted that many visitors to the town do not miss the chance to enjoy fresh oysters, sold cheaply at the price of RM2-RM3 a shell.

The various means of transportation to Haadyai also makes it the main transportation hub of southern Thailand. One can reach Haadyai via road, rail or flight.

Furthermore, the Haadyai International Airport is the fifth-busiest airport in Thailand, reinforcing the tourism and commercial potential of the small city.

SHOPPING HEAVEN

Haadyai is known as a shopping haven among tourists. It offers items such as shoes, clothes, cloth by the yard, snacks and bags at prices that not only are competitive, but also can be further reducing by bargaining.

On her visit to the city, the writer already carried a list of items ordered by friends. Fortunately, she was staying at a hotel situated right in the middle of a shopping area, on the Niphat-Uthit 3 Road.

The writer only had to walk a short distance from the hotel before she chanced upon smiling traders beckoning her to their stalls with a friendly "Sawatdi khah, chern khao ma doo khang nai, khah" (Hello, please come in and have a look).

The area also boasts of the Lido Shopping Centre, the Odeon Shopping Centre, and Sanehanuson - all popular shopping haunts offering prices that vary from the reasonable to the expensive. The quality of goods sold is fairly good.

Tourists should also not miss the chance to shop at the two major markets in Haadyai - the Asian Trade and Greenway - located on Kanchanawanit Road.

There is also a floating market in Klonghae that is worth visiting, but unfortunately it was closed during the Songkran festival.

LANGUAGE

It was rather difficult to communicate with the Thais, as only a few of them can converse in English. At times, the writer had to resort to sign language to express herself or bargain for a lower price.

However, many of the traders were experienced in handling tourists, so business transactions were mostly successful.

A few traders could converse in Malay, albeit in a heavy Kelantanese dialect, which nevertheless seemed to facilitate sales.

CHEAP SEAFOOD

A visit to Haadyai would not be complete without sampling the variety of seafood available in the city.

Muslim visitors will easily be able to find halal food in Haadyai, as 80 per cent of its inhabitants are Muslims.

In fact, halal certifications are framed on the walls of restaurants, and female restaurant staff normally wear the hijab (Muslim head covering).

An item that one must try when dining in Thailand is, of course, the tom yam. The intense spiciness of this soupy dish differs from its namesake served in Malaysia.

Other popular dishes include fried beef, mackerel in three flavours, fish kiangsom and prawn sambal served at the Chekkar Restaurant, a popular eatery among Malaysians.

TUK TUK

A unique way of getting around in Thailand is by the `tuk tuk' - a three-wheel auto rickshaw that functions in the same way as a taxi.

The tuk tuk's small size enables it to travel through crowded terrains when street-hopping and during traffic jams, making it ideal for tourists.

It was the writer's first experience in one, and the tuk tuk admittedly felt a tad unsafe due to the rapid speed at which it is usually driven. No need for air-conditioning here, as such speeds enable the air outside to cool down the vehicle.

Tuk tuk drivers tend to charge exorbitantly, so one must be ready to haggle with them to reduce the fare. The standard rate is between 10 and 20 Baht (99 sen to RM1.98), depending on the distance covered.

One can also travel through Haadyai via pick-up trucks called "songthaew."

These are normally equipped with two cushioned benches running along either sides of the back of the truck, and passengers sit on these benches, making it a sort of shared taxi.

CABLE CARS

Haadyai also has a cable car service that covers a length of 535 metres, located at the Haadyai City Park. This site is a tourist attraction where Hindus and Buddhists offer prayers.

The park contains the Phra Buddha Mongkol Maharaj statue that was installed on the occasion of His Majesty King Bhumibol's 6th Cycle Birthday Celebration.

It is the largest Buddha statue in southern Thailand, with the height of 19.9 metres and weight of 200 tonnes.

Near the park is located the Haadyai Ice Dome, which visitors can visit to cool themselves in the scorching April heat.

Interestingly, the ice sculptures there include one of a Putrajaya building - a flattering acknowledgement of Malaysia's progress.

Songkhla is only 24 km from Haadyai, and if one has the time, one should visit the Samila beach there, as well as the Songkhla Aquarium.

Sawatdi khah Haadyai! The writer will definitely return for more!
