1. Grand Canyon of Mars
Welcome to Valles Marineris – the biggest canyon in the entire Solar System
It's difficult to recount exactly the impact the Grand Canyon has on you on your first visit. It's pretty overwhelming: at around 29 kilometres (18 miles) at its widest point and nearly two kilometres (1.2 miles) from the plateau to the Colorado River at its deepest, it's probably the biggest thing anyone could hope to witness in their lives. Yet the entire Grand Canyon would be no more than a mere gully in the biggest canyon in the Solar System.

Valles Marineris is unbelievably enormous, spanning over 4,000 kilometres (2,500 miles) in length, with some parts of it 200 kilometres (125 miles) wide and over ten kilometres (six miles) deep. It would stretch across the entire United States if it was on Earth and its size is only exaggerated by the fact that Mars is around half the size of Earth – around 20 per cent of Mars's circumference is taken
up by this massive gouge in its surface.

The canyon is, naturally, host to a plethora of interesting geological features that offer scientists clues as to its turbulent past. Located just south of Mars's equator, its western end begins with a series of steep, maze-like valleys given the sinister Latin title Noctis Labyrinthus, or 'the labyrinth of the night'. This region shows typical fault-line activity, with valley-forming depressions known as 'grabens'. Moving eastwards, Valles Marineris starts to grow in breadth and depth, with twin canyons called the Ius and Tithonium chasmata running parallel to each other, divided by a central ridge. This gives way to three more chasmata and the deepest part of the canyon at 11 kilometres (6.8 miles) from the plains above. These eventually lead to the eastern end: Coprates Chasma, defined by its layered deposits that could originate from landslides or water erosion, Eos and the Ganges chasmata and, finally, where the canyon terminates in the Chryse region, a mere kilometre (0.62 miles) above Valles Marineris's deepest point.

Although there's evidence of a number of processes at work here including water erosion, the scientific community generally agrees today that the volcanic region west of Valles Marineris played a major role in the formation of this huge rift, with water reshaping and deepening its course. It's thought that as the Tharsis Montes was pushed up my molten rock to form gigantic volcanoes, the crust split to form fault lines around 3.5 billion years ago, which inevitably widened to form Valles Marineris. Though they share many similarities, this is unlike the Grand Canyon, which was gradually carved out of the surrounding rock millions of years ago by the meandering of the Colorado River and its tributaries.

How Valles Marineris formed It's thought that Valles Marineris is an example of a giant rift valley, similar to Africa's rift valley system. Its formation is primarily tectonic and consists of three main stages that begins with the Tharsis bulge, a region where Valles Marineris is today that began to uplift as magma rose, as early as 4 billion years ago. The pressure and extra weight of magma led to parts of the crust forming graben – valleys sunk along fault lines. The crust then began to float on the magma and, pushed to breaking point, splits along the length of Valles Marineris. Finally, tectonic activity, landslides, asteroid impacts and even meltwater could have widened and deepened the long chasm to form Valles Marineris as we see it today.

2. Chasm with a violent past
Meet Valles Marineris's little brother If it weren't for its bigger sibling several hundred kilometres to the south, Kasei Valles would have taken the gong for being the biggest canyon system on Mars, if not the Solar System. As it stands, its 3,000-kilometre (1,900-mile) expanse, three-kilometre (1.8-mile) depth is still more than prominent enough to stand out from the surface to any passing orbiter. It even tops Valles Marineris in places, reaching over 300 kilometres (185 miles) wide. Its size isn't what makes Kasei Valles a wonder of Mars alone though. All 1.5 million square kilometres (nearly 600,000 square miles) of the region were forged by some of the most violent events in Mars's history. Today, the most potent force Kasei Valles faces is the occasional, turbulent dust storm that, given the thin Martian atmosphere, is hardly about to carve another record-breaking canyon into it any time soon. It was a different story over 3 billion years ago, though: the same raging tectonics that were busy creating Valles Marineris were ripping the landscape apart further north, bringing groundwater to the surface which combined with ice melted by the volcanoes further west to create furious torrents of mud, forming and shaping the channels of Kasei Valles. The same violent floods failed to completely erode the outcrop of Sacra Mensa but further downstream, they made mincemeat of the southern rim of the 100-kilometre (62-mile) Sharonov crater, before emptying into the plain of Chryse Planitia.

3. Super Volcano
The tallest peak on Mars and in the Solar System

At some point in the distant future, when commercial space flights have reached the border of the asteroid belt and we can freely explore other planets, Olympus Mons will likely become the number one tourist destination in the Solar System, outside of any wonder on Earth. It holds some impressive titles, including the tallest known peak in the Solar System at 22 kilometres (14 miles) from base to tip and a diameter of around 624 kilometres (374 miles), nearly the same size as France and about the same size as the US state of Arizona. It has a caldera to match its enormous expanse: at around 80 kilometres (50 miles) in diameter, these six collapsed magma chambers form a single craterlike depression that's easily large enough to comfortably hold one of the biggest cities in the world by area, New York, with plenty of room to spare. And the volume of Olympus Mons is equally huge at around 100 times that of the Hawaiian volcano Mauna Loa, which is enough to contain the entire Hawaiian archipelago from Hawaii to Kauai, in fact.

This is no mere mountain, however. Olympus Mons is a giant volcano, a shield volcano to be precise, the kind that spews lava slowly down its slopes rather than violently erupting magma, smoke and ash kilometres into the sky. As a shield volcano it has a low profile and its sides slope at an average incline of only five per cent. In fact, if you were standing at the top of Olympus Mons and didn't know it, you probably wouldn't be aware that you were at the summit of a very high mountain. If you walked to the far edge where the volcano begins to rise, you'd encounter an escarpment, or boundary cliff, an astonishing ten kilometres (six miles) high. That's higher than the largest volcano on Earth, Hawaii's own shield volcano Mauna Loa.

Olympus Mons' giant size is no fluke. Low Martian gravity has a part to play in the continuous build-up of cooling lava on its flanks. But tectonic activity on Mars is extremely limited compared to Earth, too: unlike the Hawaiian islands, for example, which have produced several smaller volcanoes as a result of plate movement over millions of years, Olympus Mons has been sitting in the same spot for a long time, allowing the volcano to continuously erupt and grow to its current size.

4. Volcanic hot spot
Tharsis Montes is responsible for Mars's most famous features

Mariner 9 was the first spacecraft to orbit another planet when it arrived at Mars in November 1971, with the Red Planet engulfed by one of its characteristic dust storms at the time. As the orbiter began to return unprecedented close-ups of the surface of Mars to Earth, NASA could make out three faint but distinctive spots. This was the Tharsis Montes region of Mars and the spots were actually the peaks of three enormous volcanoes, evenly spaced in a northeast-southwest orientation. To the
northwest, what had been known as 'Nix Olympica' since the 19th Century and was suspected to be a mountain, was discovered to be a massive volcano and was subsequently renamed Olympus Mons.

Tharsis Montes is the biggest volcanic region on Mars: it's some 4,000 kilometres (2,500 miles) wide
and is home to 12 huge volcanoes up to 100 times bigger than their equivalent on Earth. The Tharsis Montes region is responsible for many of Mars's more interesting wonders. Around 4 billion years ago, rising magma caused what is now a plateau to rise, forming the Tharsis bulge, a geological feature the size of North America. This led to the formation of Valles Marineris, the Tharsis Montes volcanoes and Alba Mons, a huge volcano with a diameter of roughly 1,500 kilometres (930 miles) but with an extremely low relief that makes it unique on Mars. Olympus Mons is often (understandably) attributed to the area, although it's actually not part of the plateau.

5. Martian two-face
The planet-shattering reason behind Mars's strange north-south divide

Sometimes it's hard to see the woods for all the trees, as is the case with the strange, nearhemispheric
dichotomy of Mars's southern highlands and northern lowlands. The difference between the two hemispheres has been observed for decades now, with investigation by orbiting probes in the late-Seventies highlighting the radical contrast between the topography of each region: the south is rugged, volcanic and pock-marked with craters and features the tallest peaks in the Solar System, while the north is a huge plain of unparalleled smoothness, with an altitude typically several kilometres below the lower regions of the south. Up until recently no one really knew why this was, although it was known that this feature was very ancient, almost as old as the planet itself.

A few theories had been postulated as to why the two halves were so different: one was that convection in the mantle caused upwelling in the south and downwelling in the north. The other, originally proposed in 1984, was that the hemispheric dichotomy was the result of a single enormous impact. It was the simplest solution to the mystery that meant the entire northern region, an area 8,500 kilometres (5,300 miles) wide and 10,600 kilometres (6,600 miles) long, was a colossal impact basin. That theory quickly got shot down because the borders of the northern hemisphere didn't fit the expected round shape of an impact crater. However, since the Eighties, several confirmed craters have been discovered with strangely elliptical borders, such as the Moon's South Pole-Aitken basin.

The case for the massive impact theory wasn't helped by the fact that the Tharsis bulge and its enormous volcanoes formed after this huge crater was created, obscuring the shape of the rim on one side. So it was only after two decades of surface and gravitational field observations by various  spacecraft that the unambiguously elliptical impact basin of the northern hemisphere was revealed. Today, although the giant impact theory hasn't been proved beyond doubt, the evidence weighs heavily in its favour. The Borealis Basin, if it is the result of an ancient impact, will be the largest  known crater in the Solar System: covering an area of around 90 million square kilometres (35 million square miles) it's larger than the continents of Europe, Australia and Asia combined. That's nearly four times as big as the next biggest known crater on Mars, Hellas Planitia. The object that created the Borealis Basin must have been terrifyingly massive, around 2,000 kilometres (1,200 miles) in diameter, striking at an angle of 45 degrees to create the elliptical basin. These objects and collisions were relatively common 4 billion years ago, shaping the geography and the orbits of the planets to mould the Solar System as we know it today.

6. Giant dust storms
The enormous clouds of fine red dust that can sometimes grow to engulf the entire planet

The surface of Mars is covered in dust far finer than the sands of any desert on Earth – indeed it's the iron oxide (rust) content of this dust and the underlying rock that gives the planet its distinctive ruddy colour. From month to month, the gentle Martian winds blow clouds of dust across the landscape, stripping the surface sands away to reveal underlying rock in some places, and accumulating in other places to form spectacular dunes.

Normally, these billowing dust storms flare up and die away in a couple of days, but occasionally they can grow in size to the scale of entire continents before subsiding. And every couple of years, around the time of Mars's closest approach to the Sun, they can run out of control to wrap the entire planet in an orange murk that persists for several months.

These enormous storms are only possible because of the size of Martian sand – the Red Planet's thin
atmosphere (exerting just one per cent of the Earth's atmospheric pressure) means that even the strongest winds of around 120 kilometres per hour or 75 miles per hour (equivalent to hurricane force on Earth), would barely be able to shift Earth-sized sand grains. But atmospheric dust grains on Mars, worn down by billions of years of steady erosion, are comparable in size to the particles in cigarette smoke, so that even the gentle winds of the planet's thin atmosphere can lift them from the ground. Wind speeds in a typical storm are around 100 kilometres per hour (62 miles per hour), but an astronaut on the surface would barely feel that as a light breeze.

Once lofted into the air, dust particles may linger for months. The reasons for this persistence are still
uncertain, but it's possible that weak electromagnetic fields help to repel them from each other and prevent them settling back on the ground. This means that once the dust particles are stirred up, they can move at speeds many times faster than those in dust storms on Earth, and travel much further. As they absorb sunlight and prevent it from reaching the surface, atmospheric temperatures may rise by up to 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit).

Awesome though they may appear, the main threat from storms to either current Mars rovers and landers, or future astronauts, comes from the dust they carry within them. As it settles back out of the atmosphere it may coat equipment and solar panels with particles that get into delicate mechanisms and cut down the efficiency of solar panels. Fortunately, NASA engineers have discovered that encounters with the occasional 'dust devils' that spiral across the Martian surface can also help remove dust and restore power.

7. Subterranean lava tubes
A hidden world of caves that could shelter Martian microbes

A skylight – or entrance – to a lava tube on Pavonis Mons Rising to about 12 kilometres (7.5 miles) above the surrounding dusty plains, Pavonis Mons is roughly three kilometres (1.9 miles) higher than
Everest. However, it has another feature that qualifies as a Martian wonder in its own right. Running down the volcano's southwest flank are a number of parallel, tadpole-shaped features that look at first like empty riverbeds. Tens of kilometres long, their heads point roughly towards the volcano's summit, while their tails peter out or merge to form broader depressions. But these valleys are not the work of water erosion. Known as 'lava tubes', they form when the surface of a lava flow starts to cool and solidify, but molten rock continues to run below the surface. When the eruption finally comes to an end, the underground river of lava may drain away completely, leaving behind a cavernous subterranean passage.

Normally, lava tubes are all but invisible from the surface, but over time, the weight of overlying rock may cause their ceilings to cave in, creating steep-sided valleys like the ones seen on Pavonis Mons. In other places, the surface may just subside to form a string of circular depressions  known as a pit chain. When the middle of the depression then collapses inward, the result is a 'skylight' opening into the lava tube. When the first astronauts reach Mars, they may head straight for these curious portals. Lava tubes offer natural protection from the harsh surface  environment, and are an obvious place to set up a long-term base. And for the same reasons, they are also one of the most promising places to look for simple Martian life.

8. Frozen carbon dioxide poles
Mars has two permanent ice caps, but they're not like Earth's poles...

The temperature at the Martian equator is probably not as bitter as you might think, pushing the mercury as high as 20 degrees Celsius (68 degrees Fahrenheit) during the summer, with a soil temperature that has been recorded close to a positively beachy 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit). It's a different story at the poles, however: with a desperately thin atmospheric pressure of just 600 pascals to insulate them – a fraction of Earth's 101,000 pascals – little heat is retained at either end of the Red Planet. Here, temperatures have been known to drop to as low as -153 degrees Celsius (-243 degrees Fahrenheit) in the complete darkness of a Martian polar winter.

The Martian caps are pretty puny compared to those on Earth. The biggest of the two, the northern ice cap, has an estimated volume of 1.6 million cubic metres (56 million cubic feet), while the Antarctic ice sheet, the biggest on Earth, has a volume of 26.5 million cubic metres (935 million cubic feet). However, the extreme cold at the Martian poles results in over a quarter of Mars's atmosphere freezing into enormous slabs – and because over 95 per cent of Martian air is carbon dioxide, winter brings a deposition of up to two metres (6.5 feet) of dry ice. When summer comes around, rising temperatures cause the frozen carbon dioxide to sublimate (turn immediately from solid to gas) and return to the atmosphere. The changes in the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, along with the increasing and receding poles during summer and winter, is so great that the gravitational field of Mars changes with the seasons as a result. Mars also experiences ice ages across a time scale of hundreds of thousands of years, caused by marginal changes in its orbit and axial tilt. Like Earth it's currently in an interglacial period, but from around 2.1 million to 400,000 years ago, a time when sabre-toothed cats, woolly mammoths and other Pleistocene megafauna roamed Earth, Mars was plunged into an ice age of its own. The increased tilt on its axis heated the poles, evaporating ice into the atmosphere only for it to settle and spread from the 60 degree latitude mark to around 30 degrees north of the Martian equator in both hemispheres.

9. Deep 9 impact
The huge Martian crater that's visible from Earth

Hellas Planitia is a huge crater that was formed in the early days of the Solar System, an era of heavy meteorite bombardment around 4 billion years ago when enormous objects flew around and collided with others on a regular basis. With its bright, reflective floor it's a spectacular site, even when viewed from Earth. It has a diameter of 2,250 kilometres (1,400 miles) and over nine kilometres (5.6
miles) separate the rim of the crater from its floor. The rims are nearly two kilometres (1.2 miles) high, which puts the floor of the basin seven kilometres (4.3 miles) below what on Mars would correspond with sea-level on Earth. At this depth, the atmospheric pressure at the bottom is nearly double that at the top. Under certain conditions, that's enough for liquid water to form. There's evidence to suggest that the gullies around the basin rim were formed by glacial movement as well as explosive boiling of the water into steam. Hellas Planitia would be the biggest crater on Mars, if it wasn't for the suspected (but still unconfirmed) Borealis Basin in Mars's northern hemisphere

The features that went on to inspire a century of science fiction

In 1877, astronomer Giovanni Schiaparelli observed numerous gullies criss-crossing the surface of Mars, which he described in his native Italian tongue as 'canali'. For better or for worse, the literal translation of 'canals' was made into English and from there, early 20th Century academics (including a certain Percival Lowell), flushed with the prominence of a new scientific age, promptly assumed that evidence of an intelligent civilisation was inferred. Fortunately, others were more scientific in their observations, pointing out that the 'canals' were caused by an optical illusion in poor-quality telescopes that joined visible features by lines. Spectroscopic analysis showed that atmospheric pressure on Mars was indeed too low for liquid water and that the Red Planet was considerably colder than originally anticipated. Finally, powerful telescopes of the day showed no such lines on Mars, which led to this rather tenuous theory quickly being debunked, although the notion of a Martian civilisation lived on in science fiction for decades. Today, albedo features – the craters and basins like Hellas Planitia that contrast the russet background, as well as dust streaks leading across mountains and dust storms – can be considered the remains of what were once the great Martian canal system.

10. The basics Mars
The fourth planet from the Sun, is commonly known as the 'red planet' because of its reddish appearance. Like many other celestial bodies in the universe, Mars is named after a Roman god of war and agricultural guardian. The features of terrestrial planet are very similar to the Moon and Earth. Mars also has impact craters reminiscent of the Moon as well as deserts, volcanoes, valleys, and polar caps comparable to Earth and was first recorded by Egyptian astronomer in 2nd millennium BC.

In 1994, astronomers discovered ultraviolet glow in the southern hemisphere of Mars. A decade later in late 2014, NASA's MAVEN spacecraft noticed a blanket of auroras in the northern hemisphere as well. The particles descended deep into the atmosphere of Mars, and created auroras approximately 100 km above the Martian surface. In 2015, NASA detected mysterious high-altitude dust clouds in Mars. It is speculated that the dust is coming from the two moons of Mars, Phobos and Deimos, but it is still unexplained how it got there.

In gold digging irony, suitors rushed to the ever increasingly wealthy Belle, who murdered them all. Eventually, her whole estate burned to the ground, killing her children and revealing dozens of corpses for police to find. The weird part was, her teeth were found in the ashes—but her body wasn't.

Amy Archer-Gilligan murdered the elderly for fun. It's horrible to hear out loud, but listen to this: in the early 1900's Archer's Connecticut home for the Elderly and Infirm saw 60 deaths, not including the deaths of several husbands. Eventually, family and friends of the deceased elderly caught on that Archer was feeding poison to her patients and was sentenced to life in prison for second-degree murder. She died in 1962 in an insane asylum. Asylum sounds too nice for someone like that.

Notoriously famed as the first American serial killer, and perhaps the inspiration for American Horror Story season five, Lavinia Fisher and her husband ran a hotel that—can you guess?—made fun out of murdering guests. What started as murder and robbery turned into an all-out killing spree. It took local police years to nail Lavinia and her husband for their crimes, and the two were eventually sentenced to death in 1820.

The further we get down this list, the more we see several things. First, women seem to have bored of serial killing as time has gone on, and second, if a woman is a nurse or part of a medical environment, buyer beware! Jane Toppan was no exception. She is famous for casually experiment on her own patients for her own enjoyment. Now, take that sentence seriously, because this next statement might gross you out. She later told authorities that she felt sexual pleasure in watching her victims die. After killing close friends, her landlord, and her sister, time finally caught up with Toppan and she was sent to Taunton Insane Hospital, where she likely Taunted the world for being foolish enough to send her to a place that would give her another 30 years of life.

The 'Textbook' Case - Falling in line with the majority of serial killers both male and female—Gifford fits the typical profile of, 'Oh, she was nice and gentle'. Her murderous rampage is a complete surprise'. Gifford was a quiet and unassuming person who apparently was feeding arsenic to patients. Well, in 1985, a handyman failed to open a box given to him by Dorothea Puente to dump—and it was a good thing he didn't open it, as it contained a decomposing human body. Luckily, fisherman found the body days later and reported it to police. After searches began to plague her premises, Puente suffered a devastating blow when police found seven dead bodies buried under her boarding house—where she had been doing most of her killing. She died in 2011.

13. Hala Fruit


The Hala fruit that grows on the Pandanus tectorius trees in Australia, Hawaii and other islands in the South Pacific has long been a delicacy of Pacific Islanders. At first glance one might think the Hala fruit is the brain of a bizarre alien species but once you break off one of the fruit's sections called keys you will find the juicy nectar the fruit is famous for. The fruit is shades of bright orange, yellow and red giving it the appearance of a planet's molten core. The fruit and the nectar it produces has a taste that is likened to that of a mango and sugar cane. Because of the fruit's stringy make-up the plant has been used by islanders as a natural type of dental floss.

12. Cherimoya


The Cherimoya found in the tropical rainforests of Central and South American may look like an artichoke that isn't fully formed or a ball made out of alligator skin but looks can be deceiving. The Cherimoya over the years has earned the nicknames 'custard apple' and 'the tree of ice cream' because of its easily scoopable creamy innards that have the  texture of yogurt and flavor that is said to be most similar to a mixture of peaches, strawberries and bananas. Because of this and the abundance of vitamins within it, it has long been a favorite dessert of the Incas and other native peoples. American author Mark Twain was once quoted as call the Cherimoya "the most delicious fruit known to men".

11. Rambutan


What looks like a clown's nose overgrown with hair or a vibrant red sea urchin, the Rambutan is actually one of the most popular fruits of of Southeast Asia. The word Rambutan itself come from the Malaysian word for hairy but if you want to  try new fruits rest easy knowing that you don't have to eat the hairy part. Once the red leathery skin is removed a pearly white colored fruit is revealed. This fruit has a soft texture and flavor that has been compared that of a white grape. Inside the flesh there is a large seed but this can be removed before consumption or spat out while devouring the fruit whole. Because of the fruits popularity and ability to be grown in almost any tropical climate you can now find it often in international supermarkets inside the United States.

10. Aguaje Fruit


This weird red fruit about the size of a golf ball appears as though it is covered in the scales of a snake but once you scratch and peel off this skin a juicy orange fruit is revealed inside. The Aguaje Fruit is native to the tropical regions of South America and it is such a valued food and popular resource of the locals that they type of palm tree it grows on has become endangered. Another reason for this is its recent adoption as a superfood by the rest of the world. The Aguaje Fruit is chock full of Vitamin C and Vitamin A and is commonly used in women's weight loss supplements as the special active ingredient. 9. Ugli Fruit


This fruit is just called Ugli by chance it really is truly ugly, but you should never judge a fruit by its peel. What looks like a month-old orange that you found underneath your refrigerator is actually a hybrid combining a mandarin orange and a grapefruit that was accidentally created at the beginning of the 20th century in Jamaican farmlands. While the rind of the fruit may be wrinkly and splotched with shades of faded orange, yellow and green the inside beholds a mouth-watering flesh that is said to taste like a juicier less sour grapefruit. It is also almost the same size as a grapefruit and the wrinkly rind actually makes peeling the Ugli Fruit incredibly easy. Just like all citrus fruits it is loaded with vitamins C and A as well as powerful antioxidants making it an ideal snack for the active adventurer.

8. Physalis


If you visit South America you may find yourself walking right past this gem of a fruit without even realizing. The physalis fruit is encased in a flaky husk that gives it the appearance of a flower bulb or an inflated leaf but the almost perfectly round orange fruit inside has long been a favorite of South Americans. There are over 70 different species of Physalis all with their own unique nicknames such as the native gooseberry and peruvian groundcherry. The fruits are a part of the nightshade family like that of an eggplant and their flavor has been likened to a tomato--being not too sweet, savory and semi-acidic. 7. Monstera Deliciosa


Native to Panama and Mexico the Monstera Deliciosa, also known as the Swiss Cheese Plant is like the fruit version of the Japanese Pufferfish, extremely toxic but if prepared correctly one of the most delicious delicacies imaginable. The fruit itself doesn't look like much, kind of like a hard corn cob that is bright shade of green, but inside there is a fruit that has people risking their lives to indulge in its juices.The seeds and skin of the plant are chock full of poison but if you wait for the fruit to be ripe enough the poison inside loses it potency. 6. Jabuticaba


Is that some weird spherical fungus growing of that tree? Has an extraterrestrial coated the tree in dark purple eggs? No, that's just the Jabuticaba tree and yes its fruit grow in clusters straight out of the trees branches and trunk. This bizarre tree is found throughout South America mainly in Brazil where it is referred to colloquially as the Brazilian Grape Tree. The fruit, the same hue as a plum and the size of a blueberry, is a wildly popular fruit used in a wide variety of local desserts. It is said to have a taste that like a combination of grapes, strawberries and melons. Because the fruit naturally starts to ferment three days after being plucked it has also become a common source of homemade liquor and wine.

5. Soursop


The soursop is the twisted spiky cousin of cherimoya and shares many of the same characteristics. The fruit is commonly found in the Caribbean, Mexico and the northern parts of South America and like the cherimoya has a creamy flesh that is flavored like a citrusy cross between a pineapple and strawberry. Beyond being intensely scrumptious the Soursop is one of the healthiest foods in the world. Other than being filled with B and C vitamins the fruit contains large amounts of cancer-fighting antioxidants. The Soursop has long been used by locals for the treatment of various conditions like respiratory illnesses and arthritis because of its anti-inflammatory attributes. 4. Mangosteen

From scorching deserts to frozen ice caps, dizzying mountains and deep sea trenches, these animals have found ways to survive in the deadliest environments on Earth

1. Camel
Where water is rare, camels thrive Ask people what camels store in their humps, and many will tell you that it's water. But contrary to the common myth, the protrusions on camels' backs have nothing to do with keeping these gangly mammals hydrated. Camel humps are simply stores of fat, which they use to fuel
their bodies when food is scarce. As for getting enough water, camels call upon a wealth of impressive adaptations to keep their bodies from drying out in the arid desert. Unlike humans, camels barely sweat at all – their thick coats help to insulate their bodies in the scorching sun, so they can withstand temperatures up to 49 degrees Celsius (120 degrees Fahrenheit) without losing excessive water through their sweat glands. And while other mammals expel moisture in their breath, the camel's nostrils have evolved to trap water vapour and reabsorb it into the body. When they do get a chance to drink, camels really go for it – an average-sized, 600-kilogram (1,300 pound) camel can consume 200 litres in around three minutes. Other mammals might rupture their blood cells by drinking so much, but the camel's unusual oval-shaped blood cells mean they're capable of withstanding extreme variations in water content.

2. Rat
Never underestimate the common rat Whether you love or loathe rats, there's no denying their phenomenal survival skills. These rodents are made of tough stuff: they've been known to survive getting flushed down the toilet and falling from heights equivalent to fi ve stories. Rats can also survive the nuclear fallout from atomic bombs, as witnessed in roof rats on the nuclear testing ground of Enewetak Atoll. The rat's anatomy seems designed to inhabit almost any environment – it is able to swim in open ocean, climb vertical walls, leap several times its body length, and bite through thick concrete or metal to find a safe place to live.

It's therefore no surprise that humans find it difficult to keep rats out of their homes. The cunning critters might scale your walls and sneak through cracks in the roof, gnaw through narrow holes in your brickwork or arrive in your toilet bowl by swimming through sewage pipes. But before you begin your anti-rat crusade, consider that these rodents are also some of the most intelligent and affectionate animals around. Pet rats love to play with their owners – like dogs, they can learn their names and be taught tricks.

3. Gannet
Seabirds that survive terrifying dive bombs While the term 'gannet' often refers to someone who scoffs
an excessive amount of food in a short amount of time, these mighty sea birds are more than mere gluttons. As the UK's largest sea bird, it's true that gannets are capable of eating large quantities of fish. However, it's the method they use to catch their prey that means they should be considered among nature's most extreme survivors.

Gannets hunt by turning their bodies into sleek, seafaring missiles – once they reach an altitude of 30 metres (98 feet), the birds angle their bodies downward and dart towards the water at terrific speed, reaching 97 kilometres (60 miles) per hour before they hit the surface. While most birds would be injured by the impact of such a daring dive, gannets' faces and chests are equipped with air sacs that cushion their entry. The extra momentum allows them to pursue their prey into deeper water than most birds.

4. Guanaco
Llama-like masters of mountaineering Along with llamas and alpacas, guanacos are related to camels. They can therefore survive for long periods without water. In fact, guanacos living in the Atacama Desert, Chile, rarely drink at all, getting all the moisture they need by consuming water absorbent plants such as cacti
and lichens. But it's not just a lack of water that guanacos have to worry about. These mammals are
frequently found in the steep, mountainous regions of South America, at breathtaking altitudes reaching up to 4,000 metres (13,100 feet) above sea level. In order to traverse these treacherous cliffs and sheer slopes, guanacos have broad, two-toed feet, which provide them with excellent balance.

Oxygen levels are dangerously low in this lofty environment, so the guanaco has adapted to make the most of the available air particles. Its blood is rich in red blood cells, containing four-times the number found in human blood. A single teaspoon of guanaco blood contains approximately 68 billion red blood cells, each
packed with haemoglobin that helps to carry oxygen around the animal's body. Life in the mountains can be bitterly cold, so the guanaco's shaggy coat is another essential tool, preventing rain from chilling their skin.

5. Cockroach
Nuclear apocalypse? No problem for cockroaches Tough, adaptable and super resilient, cockroaches are among the most impressive survivors of the insect world. Tests have shown that these much-maligned bugs are capable of surviving powerful radioactive rays, meaning that in the event of a worldwide nuclear war, cockroaches could potentially outlive humans.

Another reason for the cockroach's hardy reputation is the species' ability to quickly adjust its instincts in response to environmental factors. For example, some populations of cockroaches have learned to avoid sugary bait, which is commonly mixed with poison to exterminate roach nests.

An aversion to sweet tastes has since passed through cockroach generations, eff ectively leading the insects to evolve in a matter of years and thus increasing their chances of survival. Perhaps most amazingly of all, cockroaches can live for weeks without a head. Cockroaches can continue scuttling
around long a  er being decapitated, breathing through spiracles in their bodies. However, without a head they are unable to eat, so they eventually die of starvation.

6. Dung beetle

Being a true survivor means taking advantage of whatever food is available. Insects are particularly unfussy when it comes to what they eat – one species has become famous for indulging in the most rancid meal imaginable.

Dung beetles are coprophagous animals, meaning that they feast on faeces. In fact, they gorge on the stuff, doing everything they can to get their segmented legs on a fresh portion. Some roll the dung into balls and push them back to their burrows; others bury it where they can find it later for a more immediate meal, or simply live in piles of manure to avoid the strenuous task of hauling it around with them.

Dung rolling is hard – some scarab species are capable of pushing balls over 1,000-times their weight. This makes them the strongest animal on Earth in comparison to body weight. Imagine tugging six double-decker buses on your own, and you'll get an idea of their strength.

7. Polar bear
Arctic survivors that embrace the cold
The Arctic is one of Earth's most famously hostile environments, so it's fitting that its most famous inhabitant is an animal built for survival. Polar bears are the biggest bears in the world, and the only ones capable of surviving in the Arctic's icy climes. Temperatures here can drop to -50 degrees Celsius
(-58 degrees Fahrenheit) in winter.

To cope with such frosty weather, the polar bear is equipped with two layers of fur: a thick thermal undercoat of dense hair, and an outer coat of longer guard hairs to prevent ice and water from reaching their skin. Beneath their coats, polar bears have a thick layer of body fat, which serves as extra
insulation and an energy reserve for long periods without food. This means polar bears are very good at fasting – they can survive for an incredible ten months without food.

Despite their survival skills, climate change remains a constant threat; polar bears are classified as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List.

8. Emperor penguin
These blubbery birds team up to tackle life in Antarctica Emperor penguins rule the vast wilderness of Antarctica. Like other birds, penguins have densely packed feathers to keep them warm. However, the best defence emperor penguins have against the cold is a thick layer of fat under their skin.

This is particularly useful when braving the icy water. While other sea birds can only remain submerged for short periods, emperor penguins can stay in the bitterly cold Antarctic water for 20 minutes. They can also dive deeper than any other bird, reaching depths of 565 metres (1,850 feet).

There's safety in numbers, as well as warmth. With little shelter from the elements, these penguins huddle together in their thousands to conserve heat. This technique is vital in the middle of winter, as the males
are left to incubate their eggs through snowstorms and subzero temperatures. Without huddling, a single emperor penguin would burn through twice the amount of body fat to stay warm.

9. Wood frog
Unassuming amphibians who freeze themselves to survive winter Frogs aren't obvious winter animals, but one North American variety has overcome its aversion to cold weather by adopting a rather extreme survival strategy: freezing itself alive.

The wood frog, which can be found in cold northern states such as Alaska, is a famously freeze-tolerant creature capable of surviving for weeks on end with 65 per cent of its body frozen solid. During this time, the frog's body grinds to a halt, with basic functions such as breathing and circulation entering a state
of limbo. When the weather warms up, the wood frog thaws out and continues life as normal, suffering no ill effects.

The trick is made possible thanks to cryoprotectants: chemicals in the frog's body that prevent cell tissues from shrinking and drying out when exposed to extreme temperatures. Scientists studying wood frogs believe that similar chemicals could be used to freeze human organs for transplantation.

10. Tardigrade
Meet the most resilient animal on Earth They may not look particularly exciting, but tardigrades (also known as water bears or moss piglets) have the distinct honour of being Earth's most extreme survivors. These microscopic creatures are 0.5 millimetres (0.02 inches) long when fully grown, and can be found in a diverse range of habitats, from the tops of mountains to the deepest depths of the ocean.

With the ability to survive boiling hot and freezing cold temperatures, withstand pressures 6,000-times stronger than the planet's atmosphere, and survive devastating doses of radiation, the tardigrade is one seriously tough cookie. The tiny critters can even survive in the lifeless vacuum of space – something no other animal has been able to do.

10. Martialis heureka


120 Million Years Old: Considered the oldest ant species in the world, the Martialis heureka was found in the Amazon rainforest in the year 2000. Completely blind, this creature lives underground and comes up to forage at night. It can't dig, so it has to rely on pre-existing tunnels. It's so strange looking that the Martialis part of its name means "from Mars." The coolest part of all? Its DNA has barely changed in the last 100 million years.

9. Horseshoe Shrimp


200 Million Years Old: Formerly known as the Triops cancriformis, this ancient shrimp species is no small fry when it comes to staying power. It was around when dinosaurs roamed the planet and shows no signs of slowing down. Adult horseshoe shrimp typically die when their habitats dry up – however, the babies have an advantage. Eggs can survive up to 20 years in extreme conditions. Talk about stubborn!

8. Sturgeon


200 Million Years Old: A sturgeon isn't one type of fish – it actually refers to 27 different species, all as old as time. Sadly, despite their age, sturgeons are card carrying members of the endangered species list. People harvest them for their roe, an ingredient in caviar. It's believed that four species in the sturgeon family are already extinct. When left alone, sturgeons live up to 60 years and can be found in North America and Eurasia.

7. Lamprey


360 Million Years Old: This "living fossil" won't win any beauty pageants, but, boy, does it have a story to tell. Largely unchanged since its beginning, the lamprey  is an eel-like parasite that attaches itself to fish and feeds on body fluids. This action often severely injures or kills the host. Creepy and disgusting, right? But that's not all. Lampreys can grow up to two feet in length. You wouldn't want to run into one in a dark room.

6. Coelacanth


360 Million Years Old: Originally thought to be extinct, a museum curator discovered one living off the coast of South Africa in 1938. This rare fish is an object of fascination for scientists because of its similarity to the ancient fish that eventually evolved into the first land vertebrae. Many believe the "coelacanth genome" holds the key to learning more about our own evolution. Who knows what the future will bring?

5. Horseshoe Crab


445 Million Years Old: You've probably seen one of these at your local aquarium, but did you know this creature had such a long history? Horseshoe crabs live in shallow areas of the ocean and come to shore when it's time to mate. Fishermen sometimes use them as bait to catch eels, and in China eggs are used as food. If you find these guys disturbing, know this – horseshoe crabs are related to arachnids, aka spiders.

4. Nautilus


500 Million Years Old: The nautilus lives on the "molted skins" of hermit crabs and lobsters and has an amazing sense of smell. It can grow to about 7 inches in diameter and lives for roughly 20 years. Prized for its attractive spiral shell that people like to collect, the nautilus is at risk for extinction. Areas that once housed hundreds of them now have only one or two.

3. Jellyfish


505 Million Years Old: In 2007, researchers at the University of Kansas discovered a fossil 200 million years older than the oldest known jellyfish fossil. We're looking at a squishy blob that existed before the first land plants appeared. Jellyfish can grow about 6 feet in length but have very short lifespans. They feed on plankton, fish eggs, and other jellyfish.

2. Sponge


760 Million Years Old: Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? Actually, the sponge has been around since before pineapples existed. Found in both tropical and polar waters, the sponge usually attaches itself to firm surfaces like rocks. Believe it or not, some can live up to 200 years. ATLANTA "Child Murders"
The curious and controversial string of deaths that sparked a two-year reign of terror in Atlanta, Georgia, has been labeled "child murders," even though a suspect—ultimately blamed for 23 of 30 "official" homicides—was finally convicted only in the deaths of two adult ex-convicts. Today, nearly two decades after that suspect's arrest, the case remains, in many minds, an unsolved mystery. Investigation of the case began, officially, on July 28, 1979. That afternoon, a woman hunting empty cans and bottles in Atlanta stumbled on a pair of corpses, carelessly concealed in roadside undergrowth. One victim, shot with a .22-caliber weapon, was identified as 14-year-old Edward Smith, reported missing on July 21. The other was 13-year-old Alfred Evans, last seen alive on July 25; the coroner ascribed his death to "probable" asphyxiation. Both dead boys, like all of those to come, were African-American.

On September 4, Milton Harvey, age 14, vanished during a neighborhood bike ride. His body was recovered three weeks later, but the cause of death remains officially "unknown." Yusef Bell, a nine-year-old, was last seen alive when his mother sent him to the store on October 21. Found dead in an abandoned school November 8, he had been manually strangled by a powerful assailant. Angel Lenair, age 12, was the first recognized victim of 1980. Reported missing on March 4, she was found six days later, tied to a tree with her hands bound behind her. The first female victim, she had been sexually abused and strangled; someone else's panties were extracted from her throat.

On March 11, Jeffrey Mathis vanished on an errand to the store. Eleven months would pass before recovery of his skeletal remains, advanced decomposition ruling out a declaration on the cause of death. On May 18, 14-year-old Eric Middlebrooks left home after receiving a telephone call from persons unknown. Found the next day, his death was blamed on head injuries, inflicted with a blunt instrument. The terror escalated that summer. On June 9, Christopher Richardson, 12, vanished en route to a neighborhood swimming pool. Latonya Wilson was abducted from her home on June 22, the night before her seventh birthday, bringing federal agents into the case. The following day, 10-year-old Aaron Wyche was reported missing by his family. Searchers found his body on June 24, lying beneath a railroad trestle, his neck broken. Originally dubbed an accident, Aaron's death was subsequently added to the growing list of dead and missing blacks.

Anthony Carter, age nine, disappeared while playing near his home on July 6, 1980; recovered the following day, he was dead from multiple stab wounds. Earl Terrell joined the list on July 30, when he vanished from a public swimming pool. Skeletal remains discovered on January 9, 1981, would yield no clues about the cause of death. Next up on the list was 12-year-old Clifford Jones, snatched off the street and strangled on August 20. With the recovery of his body in October, homicide detectives interviewed five witnesses who named his killer as a white man, later jailed in 1981 on charges of attempted rape and sodomy. Those witnesses provide details of the crime consistent with the placement and condition of the victim's body, but detectives chose to ignore their sworn statements, listing Jones with other victims of the "unknown" murderer.

Darren Glass, an 11-year-old, vanished near his home on September 14, 1980. Never found, he joins the list primarily because authorities don't know what else to do with his case. October's victim was Charles Stephens, reported missing on the ninth and recovered the next day, his life extinguished by asphyxiation. Capping off the month, authorities discovered skeletal remains of Latonya Wilson on October 18, but they could not determine how she died.

On November 1, nine-year-old Aaron Jackson's disappearance was reported to police by frantic parents. The boy was found on November 2, another victim of asphyxiation. Patrick Rogers, 15, followed on November 10. His pitiful remains, skull crushed by heavy blows, were not unearthed until February 1981. Two days after New Year's, the elusive slayer picked off Lubie Geter, strangling the 14-year-old and dumping his body where it would not be found until February 5. Terry Pue, 15, went missing on January 22 and was found the next day, strangled with a cord or piece of rope. This time, detectives said that special chemicals enabled them to lift a suspect's fingerprints from Terry's corpse. Unfortunately, they were not on file with any law enforcement agency in the United States. Patrick Baltazar, age 12, disappeared on February 6. His body was found a week later, marked by ligature strangulation, and the skeletal remains of Jeffrey Mathis were discovered nearby. A 13-year-old, Curtis Walker, was strangled on February 19 and found the same day. Joseph Bell, 16, was asphyxiated on March 2. Timothy Hill, on March 11, was recorded as a drowning victim.

On March 30, Atlanta police added their first adult victim to the list of murdered children. He was Larry Rogers, 20, linked with younger victims by the fact that he had been asphyxiated. No cause of death was determined for a second adult victim, 21-year-old Eddie Duncan, but he made the list anyway, when his body was found on March 31. On April 1, ex-convict Michael McIntosh, age 23, was added to the roster on grounds that he, too, had been asphyxiated. By April 1981, it seemed apparent that the "child murders" case was getting out of hand. Community critics denounced the official victims list as incomplete and arbitrary, citing cases like the January 1981 murder of Faye Yearby to prove their point. Like "official" victim Angel Lenair, Yearby was bound to a tree by her killer, hands behind her back; she had been stabbed to death, like four acknowledged victims on the list. Despite those similarities, police rejected Yearby's case on grounds that (a) she was a female—as were Wilson and Lenair—and (b) that she was "too old" at age 22, although the last acknowledged victim had been 23. Author Dave Dettlinger, examining police malfeasance in the case, suggests that 63 potential "pattern" victims were capriciously omitted from the "official" roster, 25 of them after a suspect's arrest supposedly ended the killing.

In April 1981, FBI spokesmen declared that several of the crimes were "substantially solved," outraging blacks with suggestions that some of the dead had been slain by their own parents. While that storm was raging, Roy Innis, leader of the Congress of Racial Equality, went public with the story of a female witness who described the murders as the actions of a cult involved with drugs, pornography, and Satanism. Innis led searchers to an apparent ritual site, complete with large inverted crosses, and his witness passed two polygraph examinations, but by that time police had focused their attention on another suspect, narrowing their scrutiny to the exclusion of all other possibilities. On April 21, Jimmy Payne, a 21-year-old ex-convict, was reported missing in Atlanta. Six days later, when his body was recovered, death was publicly attributed to suffocation, and his name was added to the list of murdered "children." William Barrett, 17, went missing May 11; he was found the next day, another victim of asphyxiation. Several bodies had, by now, been pulled from local rivers, and police were staking out the waterways by night. In the predawn hours of May 22, a rookie officer stationed under a bridge on the Chattahoochee River reported hearing "a splash" in the water nearby. Above him, a car rumbled past, and officers manning the bridge were alerted. Police and FBI agents halted a vehicle driven by Wayne Bertram Williams, a black man, and spent two hours grilling him and searching his car, before they let him go. On May 24, the corpse of Nathaniel Cater, a 27-year-old convicted felon, was fished out of the river downstream. Authorities put two and two together and focused their probe on Wayne Williams.

From the start, he made a most unlikely suspect. The only child of two Atlanta school teachers, Williams still lived with his parents at age 23. A college dropout, he cherished ambitions of earning fame and fortune as a music promoter. In younger days, he had constructed a working radio station in the basement of the family home. On June 21, Williams was arrested and charged with the murder of Nathaniel Cater, despite testimony from four witnesses who reported seeing Cater alive on May 22 and 23, after the infamous "splash." On July 17, Williams was indicted for killing two adults—Cater and Payne—while newspapers trumpeted the capture of Atlanta's "child killer." At his trial, beginning in December 1981, the prosecution painted Williams as a violent homosexual and bigot, so disgusted with his own race that he hoped to wipe out future generations by killing black children before they could breed. One witness testified that he saw Williams holding hands with Nathaniel Cater on May 21, a few hours before "the splash." Another, 15 years old, told the court that Williams had paid him two dollars for the privilege of fondling his genitals. Along the way, authorities announced the addition of a final victim, 28-year-old John Porter, to the list of victims.

Defense attorneys tried to balance the scales with testimony from a woman who admitted having "normal sex" with Williams, but the prosecution won a crucial point when the presiding judge admitted testimony on 10 other deaths from the "child murders" list, designed to prove a pattern in the slayings. One of those admitted was the case of Terry Pue, but neither side had anything to say about the fingerprints allegedly recovered from his corpse in January 1981. The most impressive evidence of guilt was offered by a team of scientific experts, dealing with assorted hairs and fibers found on certain victims. Testimony indicated that some fibers from a brand of carpet found inside the Williams home (and many other homes, as well) had been identified on several bodies. Further, victims Middlebrooks, Wyche, Cater, Terrell, Jones, and Stephens all supposedly bore fibers from the trunk liner of a 1979 Ford automobile owned by the Williams family.

The clothes of victim Stephens also allegedly yielded fibers from a second car—a 1970 Chevrolet—owned by Wayne's parents. Curiously, jurors were not informed of multiple eyewitness testimony naming a different suspect in the Jones case, nor were they advised of a critical gap in the prosecution's fiber evidence. Specifically, Wayne Williams had no access to the vehicles in question at the times when three of the six "fiber" victims were killed. Wayne's father took the Ford in for repairs at 9:00 A.M. on July 30, 1980, nearly five hours before Earl Terrell vanished that afternoon. Terrell was long dead before Williams got the car back on August 7, and it was returned to the shop next morning (August 8), still refusing to start. A new estimate on repair costs was so expensive that Wayne's father refused to pay, and the family never again had access to the car. Meanwhile, Clifford Jones was kidnapped on August 20 and Charles Stephens on October 9, 1980. The defendant's family did not purchase the 1970 Chevrolet in question until October 21, 12 days after Stephen's death.

On February 27, 1982, Wayne Williams was convicted on two counts of murder and sentenced to a  double term of life imprisonment. Two days later, the Atlanta "child murders" task force officially disbanded, announcing that 23 of 30 "List" cases were considered solved with his conviction, even though no charges had been filed. The other seven cases, still open, reverted to the normal homicide detail and remain unsolved to this day. In November 1985, a new team of lawyers uncovered once-classified documents from an investigation of the Ku Klux Klan, conducted during 1980 and '81 by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. A spy inside the Klan told GBI agents that Klansmen were "killing the children" in Atlanta, hoping to provoke a race war. One Klansman in particular, Charles Sanders, allegedly boasted of murdering "List" victim Lubie Geter, following a personal altercation. Geter reportedly struck Sanders's car with a go-cart, prompting the Klansman to tell his friend, "I'm gonna kill him. I'm gonna choke the black bastard to death." (Geter was, in fact, strangled, some three months after the incident in question.) In early 1981, the same informant told GBI agents that "after twenty black-child killings, they, the Klan, were going to start killing black women." Perhaps coincidentally, police records note the unsolved murders of numerous black women in Atlanta in 1980–82, with most of the victims strangled. On July 10, 1998, Butts County Superior Court Judge Hal Craig rejected the latest appeal for a new trial in Williams's case, based on suppression of critical evidence 15 years earlier. Judge Craig denied yet another new-trial motion on June 15, 2000.

"AX Man of New Orleans"
In the predawn hours of May 23, 1918, New Orleans grocer Joseph Maggio and his wife were murdered in bed by a prowler who chiseled through their back door, used Joseph's ax to strike each victim once across the skull, then slit their throats with a razor to finish the job. Maggio's brothers discovered the bodies and were briefly held as suspects, but police could find no evidence of their involvement in the crime and both were soon released. A few blocks from the murder scene, detectives found a cryptic message chalked on the sidewalk. It read: "Mrs. Maggio is going to sit up tonight just like Mrs. Toney." Police could offer no interpretation, so the press stepped in. An article in the New Orleans States cited a "veritable epidemic" of unsolved ax murders in 1911, listing the victims as Italian grocers named Cruti, Rosetti (allegedly killed with his wife), and Tony Schiambra (whose spouse was also reportedly slain). Over nine decades, half a dozen authors have accepted that report as factual, relying on the "early" crimes to bolster this or that supposed solution in the case. Unfortunately, the initial report was so garbled that it bore little resemblance to fact.

Local records reveal that a victim named Cruti was murdered at home in August 1910, followed one month later by a vicious ax assault on Joseph and Conchetta Rissetto. (Joseph survived his wounds and blamed the crime on an unidentified burglar.) The only coroner's report on a Rosetti in 1911 involved Mary Rosetti, a black woman whose death was ascribed to dysentery. Meanwhile, New Orleans journalists ignored the June 1911 ax attacks on a couple named Davi. (The wife survived in that case.) Anthony Sciambra and his wife Johanna were murdered at home in May 1912, both shot at close range and thus divorced entirely from the Ax Man crimes. Ironically, there were other unsolved ax murders in Louisiana during 1911, claiming a total of 16 lives, but the victims were all black and none were killed in New Orleans.

On June 28, 1918, a baker delivering bread to the grocery of Louis Besumer found a panel cut from the back door. He knocked, and Besumer emerged, blood streaming from a head wound. Inside the apartment, Besumer's "wife"—Anna Lowe, a divorcée—lay critically wounded. She lingered on for seven weeks, delirious, once calling Besumer a German spy and later recanting. On August 5 she died, after naming Besumer as her attacker, prompting his arrest on murder charges. (Nine months later, on May 1, 1919, a jury deliberated all of 10 minutes before finding him innocent.) Returning late from work that same evening— August 5—Ed Schneider found his pregnant wife unconscious in their bed, her scalp laid open. She survived to bear a healthy daughter, but her memory of the attack was vague, at best. A hulking shadow by her bed, the ax descending—and oblivion.

On August 10, sisters Pauline and Mary Bruno woke to sounds of struggle in the adjacent room occupied by their uncle, Joseph Romano. They rushed next door to find him dying of a head wound, but they caught a glimpse of his assailant, described in official reports as "dark, tall, heavy-set, wearing a dark suit and a black slouch hat." The rest of August 1918 was a nightmare for police, with numerous reports of chiseled doors, discarded axes, and lurking strangers. Several of the latter were pursued by vengeful mobs but always managed to escape. At last, with time and the distraction of an armistice in war-torn Europe, the hysteria began to fade.

On March 10, 1919, the scene shifted to Gretna, across the river from New Orleans. A prowler invaded the home of Charles Cortimiglia, helping himself to the grocer's own ax before wounding Charles and his wife and killing their infant daughter. From her hospital bed, Rose Cortimiglia accused two neighbors, Iorlando Jordano and his son Frank, of committing the crime. Despite firm denials from Charles, both suspects were jailed pending trial.

Meanwhile, on March 14, the Times-Picayune published a letter signed by "The Axeman." Describing himself as "a fell demon from the hottest hell," the author announced his intention of touring New Orleans on March 19—St. Joseph's Night—and vowed to bypass any home where jazz was playing at the time. "One thing is certain," he declared, "and that is that some of those people who do not jazz it (if there be any) will get the axe!" On the appointed night, already known for raucous celebration, New Orleans was even noisier than usual. The din included numerous performances of "The Axman's Jazz," a song composed for the occasion, and the evening passed without a new attack.

The Jordano trial opened in Gretna on May 21, 1919. Charles Cortimiglia did his best for the defense, but jurors believed his wife and convicted both defendants of murder on May 26. Frank Jordano was sentenced to hang, while his elderly father received a term of life imprisonment. (Charles Cortimiglia divorced his wife after the trial, and Rose was arrested for prostitution in November 1919. She recanted her testimony on December 7, 1920, explaining to police that spite and jealousy prompted her accusations. The Jordanos were pardoned and released from custody.) And still the raids continued. Grocer Steve Boca was wounded at home on August 27, 1919, his door chiseled through, the bloody ax discarded in his kitchen.

On September 3 the Ax Man or an imitator entered Sarah Laumann's bedroom through an open window, wounding her in bed and dropping his weapon on the lawn outside. Eight weeks later, on October 27, grocer Mike Pepitone was murdered at home; his wife glimpsed the killer but offered detectives no helpful description. There the crime spree ended as it hadbegun, in mystery.

Author Robert Tallant proposed a solution to the Ax Man riddle in 1953, in his book Murder in New Orleans. According to Tallant, a man named Joseph Mumfre was shot and killed in Los Angeles on December 2, 1920, while walking on a public street. Mumfre's assailant, a veiled woman dressed in black, was identified as the widow of Mike Pepitone. At her murder trial, which resulted in a 10-year prison sentence, she named Mumfre as her husband's killer—and, by implication, as the Ax Man of New Orleans. Tallant reports that New Orleans detectives checked Mumfre's record and found that he was serving time in jail for burglary during the Ax Man's hiatus from August 1918 to March 1919.

Other authors seized upon Tallant's solution, reporting that Joseph Mumfre was imprisoned between 1911 and 1918, thus implying a connection to earlier New Orleans homicides (though he would still be excluded as a suspect from the 1912 Sciambra attack). Author Jay Robert Nash "solved" the case in his book Bloodletters and Badmen (1973), calling Mumfre a Mafia hit man who was allegedly pursuing a long vendetta against "members of the Pepitone family." The explanation fails when one recalls that only one of the Ax Man's 11 victims—and the last, at that—was a Pepitone. Likewise, speculation on a Mafia extortion plot against Italian grocers ignores the fact that four victims were not Italian, and several were completely unconnected to the grocery business.

Still, there is a more deadly flaw in the Tallant-Nash solution to the Ax Man mystery: the Joseph Mumfre murder in Los Angeles never happened! Ax Man researcher William Kingman has pursued the Mumfre tale and received formal notice from California's State Registrar of Vital Statistics on September 10, 2001, that no person named Joseph Mumfre died anywhere in the Golden State between 1905 and 2000. The story of Mumfre's murder in Los Angeles and Mrs. Pepitone's subsequent trial is, in short, a complete fabrication. Robert Tallant is beyond interrogation on this or any other subject, having died in New Orleans on April 1, 1957. As for the Ax Man of New Orleans, his case remains a tantalizing mystery.
